Plan to head to local NAPA store this AM to get started. Ordered the drain valve online. I still can't tell if I have the F37 mod. No shudder issues so far. And only getting ~21 mpg of mostly city driving.

General thoughts are I like it so far. Nice sz for getting around and shopping. And still better mpg than my Z71 Suburban. I don't care for the fog light switch design. Lends itself to inadvertent deactivation when using turn signal. Steering wheel grip is too small, but got a leather cover that looks good and problem solved. I also don't think I like the plastic engine cover. Maybe "pretty" but I just don't like extra .....stuff under the hood so I plan on running around with it off to see if there is a noticeable noise increase. Not in cold climate so shouldn't need it as a thermal blanket.

If our daughter ends up not wanting it, I will either keep it and sell the Z71, or sell it. I was fortunate to get a good deal at trade value, so I can recoup either way. Sell it to her and pass on great deal, or make a couple bucks.

Personally my thoughts: I am a guy, with big swinging balls and hair on my chest, I like manly things like pretty women and beer, I also like to be able to see my engine.

Took the cover off nearly 5 years ago and have been debating tossing it in the trash since.

It's fine to leave the MAF unplugged. Mine has been that way for nearly 100k now.

Thanks for this. I have been recruited to do a timing belt and I will be happy to add the information here to the most important toolbox - the one on my head. I'm taking lots of notes and learning lots from the Gurus.

My wife and I have been looking for a Diesel Liberty for some time, and finally found one.
This forum, and especially the newbie guide, is greatly appreciated.

Hi Guys,

Just joined the forum. Bought My very first CRD three days ago. '04 Liberty 2.8CRD Stock. Here in South Africa its called a Cherokee (Not to be confused with Grand Cherokee which is a completely differnt shape from the KJ). Its my first Jeep as well as my first Diesel so the info here i believe is completely invaluable. I have really learned a lot just by reading this thread. ou will be hearing a LOT from me in the future.

Best regards

Dylan

Thank You for the noob guide Image M1-301 with stock skids fits the jeep.

*There is some concern that the M1-301 will not fit with factory skids - LOST member sidebrake confirms later in this thread that the M1-301 does fit with the stock skids.

Well, I followed the directions but I don't think it worked. I'm a Noob, although I've had the Crud Burner for 5 years. Just got the straight skinny on the fact that it has a timing BELT rather than a chain!! Dealer service writers told me at least twice, the last time maybe a year ago. Was just checking 'cause I'm a retired ASE Master Tech, out of the loop, mumbling along on my road trips with my girlfriend, enjoying the sights, listening to the burble of the diesel exhaust, dumb and happy! At 110k mi, I'm as lucky as can be and broke as an overwound clock after paying off the dealer for a new T/B, CCV filter, water pump etc., etc. Better safe/broke than sorry.
Gettin' old makes one lazy and I could never stand that in the techs who worked for me as a S/M over the years so I am guilty as charged. Time to get back in the game. REALLY appreciate the posts on the CRD. BTW it's really easy to change the F/F by unbolting the housing from the firewall. Two bolts. Hoses have a lot of slack and it's really easy to unplug everything.
Nice to get some outside input. Bought mine during a love affair during the last gas crisis from an engineer in Boise. I live in Seattle. Flew over there with a round trip ticket and drove it back, 30MPG, HOOWHA! It's been my "other" 4x4 after the 2000 Dakota, 4.7L, which is the hunting truck. Gotta say I've been kinda stoopid about maintenance other than LOFs. Evidently, not many were sold here on the Left Coast and info is scarce.
Gotta love that torque! Has 500 lbs greater tow capacity than my Dakota! Well that's embarrassing!

I went to the mechanic to clean the MAP sensor because I was not finding it in the engine, and the guy said he had to charge me $100 because according to him, it has to be cleaned with an autoclave and not with just your hands since it is very fragile. Is this true?

Nope. It's a sensitive part, but not particularly delicate. Did you take your engine cover off when you went looking for it?

Not exactly a CRD newbie, but brand new to the site. And I'm kicking myself very soundly for not having found it years earlier.

My wife and I have owned a 2005 Liberty CRD since new- 7 years now. It has been pretty reliable for 6 of those 7 years. The first 6 months were hell, as there were intractable problems with the brake system that took multiple trips to the dealer to get corrected. It then ran pretty reliably for quite a while. We split turbo outlet hoses twice in the last year, which took a lot of the joy out of life. And then back in January, at 98k miles, it spit out the turbocharger very dramatically. It was on service contract and 100k mile extended warranty via the dealership, and we foolishly had it towed back there for the turbo work (and replacement of the timing belt, since it was due).

It has run like hammered dogmeat since the turbo and timing belt replacement, with major driveability issues. When on an even throttle at cruise, it would cut out and miss on all 4 cylinders for a couple of revolutions, and then pick back up, on about a 30 second cycle. Driving on cruise control was a study in overshooting and undershooting by 500rpm every 30 seconds, and was pretty maddening. It went back to the dealer 3 times, each time being returned with a "no trouble found". They claim that no codes were set, and they couldn't reproduce the problem... This was clearly a fuel delivery issue, whether mechanical or electrical in nature. It's a diesel, for crying out loud: if it has fuel, air, and compression, it freakin' has to run!

This culminated with a failure this past weekend (at 105k miles) that left us running on 1 cylinder for about 5 minutes, trying desperately to get it out of heavy traffic across 4 lanes before we were hit from behind. Most maddeningly, a key-off-key-on cycle (once we made it safely to the shoulder) cleared this up, and left it running no worse than before. It went back to the dealer, who then told us "Well, there were no codes set, and we can't reproduce your problem, but we have to replace all the injectors, it'll be $4500, and we can't get the parts until July". In a pig's eye! Button it back up, give it back, and get the heck out of my life.

So, after *that* last-straw occurrence this weekend, I found this place via Google. I immediately read the very well done noobie section here, as well as many of the other threads. I then took the vehicle to a well-regarded diesel specialist in the area who has actually worked on CRDs before, and provided them with the common wisdom described here as a starting point and guide. He was able to reproduce the cutout problem immediately (before even leaving the parking lot), found a whole bunch of codes set, and confirmed a number of mechanical issues that are well described here (such as an unrecognizably gunked up MAP sensor)- as well as work that was apparently performed improperly at the time of the turbo repair. Haven't got the vehicle back yet, but I expect that when I do, things will have improved dramatically.

They are installing the improved heater/filter head on spec, and I'll be doing the lift pump mod as soon as we get it back to work around any potential leakage issues there. If it is running at all well, a GDE tune will follow on shortly. I'm hoping to get another 100k out of it, whereas we were about ready to either shoot it or trade it as of Sunday evening. Serves me right for believing in the service contract, and I'm glad the damned thing has now expired. Won't make that mistake again.

So, in short: thanks very much to all for sharing all your experiences here! It would have saved a lot of pain to have found this a couple of years ago...

Noob here. Noob that sux at working on cars to boot. Read the guide, will re-re-re-re-re-read. Thanks OP and other contributors. Little overwhelmed at the moment. Bought the CRD for my wife. Hope I picked the right vehicle. The diesel thing scared me from the get-go... and then I filled up the tank yesterday for the first time, $72. Love it!!! :furious: Someone here make me feel better about things.

Post subject:  Re: Sam's CRD Noob Guide:

Well, just for completeness: after having the mechanic follow the combined wisdom here with respect to sensor health, ours is running better than it has in years. Mileage is back up into the 28mpg range again, and the drivability issues are completely corrected. Now I just have a few things to do myself to really make it dance and sing (inline thermostat to correct the running-too-cool issues, fan clutch/gasser fan, fuel filter head, lift pump, GDE tune). So I'm a happy camper, and my wife and I are back in love with the little thing again- after having been ready to shoot it. So there very definitely is hope.

I'm glad that the timing belt/WP/tensioner replacement is done. Hopefully, that part was done right, and I for one am permanently done with dealers. This place is an absolutely dynamite reference, without question: thanks again to all the contributors!

A few questions, sorry if this is covered and I just missed it...

What do I clean the MAP sensor with? Like cloth, old tooth brush, etc? I am headed out to get chlorine free disc brake cleaner now.

I don't understand the whole "tune" thing to correct the ORM CEL when the MAF is unplugged. My wife will be driving this and I don't want to have the CEL on constantly. What exactly do I need to do to correct the CEL?

What kind of tubing, size, and length do I buy to do the Elephant Hose mod.?

Thanks,

Update: Cleaned the MAP with info in PM from Sir Sam... just sprayed liberally and put it back in. It was surprisingly not very dirty. 53,685 miles and I am at least the second owner... which leads me to the next part of this (bit of a head scratcher). Maybe the PO was a LOSTJEEPer. :?:

I unplugged the MAF (after doing the MAP cleaning & test drive). Got back in, cranked it up, and no CEL. I drove it for a while, 2 miles or so, and nothing. Plugged the MAF back in, drove home, still no CEL. So, does this mean the GDE tune has possibly already been done disabling the EGR?

Would it still be a good idea to do the EHM or not?

It will take a little while for the CEL to come on after unplugging the MAF, typically one warmup cycle will do it. EHM is still a good idea to do independently of MAP/ORM/SEGR/GDE tune

The CEL did finally come on. I also now have the Passenger Air Bag Off light on, just noticed it driving a few minutes ago. Can this be related to doing the ORM? To be honest I don't even know where the controls are for PAB. I need to / will find that in the morning.
