I keep my CRD garaged and it is heated to 60 degrees so a cold start is not outdoor ambient temperature. I have sound recording but don’t know how to post. https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/jpkueggxq6uyua02d6wyt/Engine-sounds.m4a?rlkey=ne0ph0cvp4669wso3tp4cxr3d&dl=0

At startup I get a clunk/rattle/chatter (hard to describe) from the engine. It runs well and the sound disappears when the engine has fully warmed up. Do you all have any thoughts as to what this is? It has been making this noise for at least a year and maybe longer.

SOLVED——The Harmonic Balancer was definitely bad. When I took it off it would rattle and the sound was definitely identifiable as the rattling sound I heard at startup. Replaced it with a new one and it sounds like it did on day one when brand new!! Thanks to all on the board especially WWDiesel!!!

Have you checked the harmonic balancer pulley?
Just a thought....

I have not. How would that 1) cause a clunk/clatter/noise and 2) if caused by the harmonic balancer pulley, what changes to cause the noise to go away when the engine reaches temperature? Lastly, how do I “check” it? Totally new territory for me by always up to learn and try!

PS- did the audio play?

I found this in the forum and this is exactly the noise it is making. The poster said it was a harmonic balancer

Audio file link played just fine for me!
I would not keep running it with a bad, damper, if it comes apart, it can tear up a bunch of stuff and get real expensive very fast!

You can contact Damper Doctor for rebuilding services. New balancers are no longer available, so finding a good used one or having yours rebuilt is your only options.

So I have concluded that the Harmonic Balancer is the cause of the noise. I will send it to Damper Doctor to be rebuilt.

Are there any tips or tricks to removing the pulley? Does the radiator have to come out?

Four bolts hold it to the crankshaft, you should be able to remove it without pulling the radiator. Pulling the radiator would provide more room if you think you need it.

Remove the top bolts for the core support to make it easier to remove the fan shroud, remove the shroud, fan/clutch, break loose the 4 bolts on the harmonic balancer, then remove the serpentine belt. Now remove the 4 balance bolts.

Cool. Silly me. I was thinking the large crankshaft bolt had to be removed but now a I see it is just the four retaining smaller bolts.

I found a new harmonic balancer pulley on eBay for way too much money but bought it anyway. Figure the Libby is good for it!!

This board is invaluable!!

Save your old one, someone may need it for a rebuild in the future.
These parts are getting harder and harder to come by.

What did it end up costing with shipping?
Some other may want to order one?
:D

So it is listed on eBay for $299. I offered $150 and the counter was $260 which I accepted. With tax it was $275 and arrived quickly from Latvia.

Did that price include shipping? And if not, what was the shipping costs?
And, how did the overall price compare to having one rebuilt?

It did include shipping. DamperDoctor never answered the phone so I do not know their rebuild cost. I suspect it would have been cheaper (and possibly better?) for a rebuild but I went with the new one so I can get back in the road.
