Man, I hate to say this because I love the CRD and this forum but this whole topic makes me not want to own a CRD! Has anyone had any luck in contacting VM North America? They are only about 45min from me, I hope I never need to call them! I should call now and ask about the glow plug deal.

I will have keep watching this, Have you had any time to work on it this weekend?

I'd like to find some time to work on ole' girl. Most of my overtime is slowing down, and I'm getting tired of seeing it on blocks. :banghead:

If there's anyone out there that would like to rent out their VM toolkit for a bit, please PM me.
Thanks guys,

After seeing your new thread about selling both of your jeeps in inoperable states.
I read through all 16 pages of this saga to find no answer to what failed. :?: :?:
What did you find damaged in the head??

Sorry for the delayed response jeepdan, I've been out hunting for arrowheads the past few days.
No, I did not find out what happened to the head. I bought the VM tool set, in hopes to try and fix it myself.
With work as busy as can be, the girls keeping me busy, and trying to squeeze in the little time I have left to the outdoors...She got put on wooden blocks and forgotten about.

Have you pulled the head off yet?
Seems like youve done everything but that.

This is a 2006 Liberty CRD, with 52,000 miles on dash, equipped with SEGR and Provent oil catch can.

1. 16 trashed rockers.
2. Ceased exhaust rocker at cylinder 2.
3. Trashed intake cam.
4. Trashed exhaust cam, extent of wear was major at cylinder 2. Sharp edges and gouges at top of lobes.
5. Injector number 3, and 4, require cleaning.
6. Injector 2, - heavily encrusted with carbon at tip and stem, difficult to remove from valve cover, stuck in place.
7. Intake and exhaust valves at cylinder number 2, heavily encrusted with carbon deposits.
7. Cylinder 2, tall carbon deposits at crest.
8. Power steering reservoir is empty.
9. Evidence of motor oil leaks at oil pan and also at transmission pan.
10. Condition of motor oil = poor. Deep dark black oil with micro bits of unknown dark chips suspended in oil attached to underside of valve cover, internal parts of head and bottom of oil pools.

a. Head gasket - no sign of failure.
b. Turbo - movement good and tight.
c. Coolant - good, no sign of oil mix.
d. T-belt - normal wear.
e. Ceramic glow plugs - undamaged - still in good shape.
e. Injector 1, showed signs of cleaning.
f. Sleeves look good, condition undetermined at first.

New parts on order, scheduled to arrive in a few weeks.

I knew I was taking a risk on this CRD, and hoped it wasn't as bad as it is. Now I am not sure it will run or run without issues when it's put back together.

Learning more about this motor than I wanted to.

I want to thank my buddy, Captain Rick "RixRam" for his on hands help and expert mechanical repair skills.

I've done one like this, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. I would just flush any potential metal bits out with gallons of diesel, and then allow to drain for days, or longer, and then spin engine a lot to rehydrate bearings. I'd also flush the fuel system after such a long sit.

Make sure to trash those potentially bent valves :2cents:

Was the engine oil and filter EVER changed?
I also suspect the previous owner used the wrong oil.

hmm, the one I've seen that had those dark deposits in it, the only thing wrong with it was the turbo was trashed, and it had 180k when I opened it. I guess a previous owner used the wrong oil, maybe. But, it just happened to be my daily driver, and it's the perkiest CRD I've driven, with tight bearings and fantastic compression??? Not sure what's up with dark deposits... I think the bottom end of these things are excellent, and can handle a lot of wrong oils. Not so much for the rockers and turbo.

For anyone following, we successfully repaired this vehicle. I don't know the previous owner of it (and don't care, either), but an apparent lack of skill and blatant negligence pertaining to the most rudimentary maintenance caused many, many headaches. Let's just say that my entire dictionary of 4 letter words was utilized, cover-to-cover, several times due to the sheer daftness of why this vehicle failed.
Nothing with 50K miles should have been treated so poorly. Were it a horse, it'd had the have been put down. Luckily, it's a Jeep.
