Ok, this is starting to get annoying. My front tires had gotten cupped to the point where they were buzzing VERY loud on the highway, even after rotating them twice and looking at everything in the front end I could think of.

The vibration and buzzing went away after I put the tires onto the back, and had an alignment done with the new struts about 2000 miles ago. The CRD has been on nothing but roads since, and not towing anything.

My front wheels are BOTH starting to cup again, from the inside shoulder and across the whole tread surface. What else could be causing this? The place that did the strut install said that everything was tight and normal, I had specifically asked them to look at the entire front end, sway bar, ball joints, driveshafts etc. This was the same shop that I have been going to for more than 15 years now, and I know they are honest and will tell me about a problem if there is one. Nada was reported, other than the SERIOUSLY buggered alignment... Which I kinda expected, since I had never had one done on this CRD in 70k miles of ownership.

112k on it, probably still original rear shocks, new front struts with original coil springs. No lift, and I'm stumped.

Your coils are sagging faster with there age,one of your issues. The other issue is your bad rear shocks, may have made the front shocks go bad also from ecessive brake diving.

Have you had the alignment checked again?
A curb, a pothole, hardly any of those around now.
Your tire size could be another factor.
I have the same problems. But I love the 215 85 16's.
It is called 4 wheel drive. Please let us know what you chose as a solution.

some years ago I had the same issue with a nissan pickup 4x4 and it went away replacing the ball joints and the pitman arm but there is no pitman arm on the crd :seuss: so I would blame the balljoints, it is hard to tell when they are really bad, the boots could be ok and still have play inside. kind like the motor mounts. but it is just a suggestion.

It was my understanding that if the ball joints were bad, the wheel would be movable when in the air, by grabbing the top and bottom and trying to rock it in or out. Is that not the way to check?

The shop that did the struts said the ball joints were solid, but I haven't checked more than asking them since before I took it to them. What I have also noticed is a sound like a loose tie rod rattling. Kind of a lower-pitched noise, and only at slower speed, but I hear it on relatively smooth roads. It kinda seems to be from the passenger side, but might be from the drivers side and just transmitting through the body. As I have never done the engine mounts, I was just chalking the noise up to that as a possible cause... Unless someone here thinks differently.

As soon as I get some more cash in, I need to do those rear shocks obviously... But the next step will be having a good look under there and see if anything feels loose at all.
