Ok guys I hope you can help me with this one, I’m not much of a mechanic so please bare with me. I have 52 thousand miles on the crd and for the past 3 days I noticed that the crd has a squeal coming from the engine bay. It starts to squeal when idling and squeals when I’m in drive and stopped when the engine is under preasure. But for some reason it goes away when I start driving and I only comes back when I’m stopped. I took it to my local mechanic and he said that it seems like the belt tentioner spring is shot and I need a new one. He also showed me that the tentioner does a lot of vibrating/shaking and he said that it wasn’t normal. Here is a video of what he said needs to be replaced and you can also see it shaking. Now here comes the hard part. I have tired searching all over the place and I can’t seem to fine the part he’s talking about.
Heres a video of that part shaking:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJDKaqMU0uQ

Can't seem to find the part in this chart....
http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/ ... atalogid=0

Any help in the right direction would be very much appreciated.

The alternator holds sort of a clutch to reduce vibrations. It now is broken so that's why the tensioner is jumping.

Belt tensioner. The overrunning alternator pulley is to eliminate the belt squeak at shutdown (if you listen to an early Dodge Cummins @ shutdown you'll know what i'm talking about). I've seen these fail over time - it's usually more related to number of engine runtime (hours) than to the mileage of the vehicle. Generally it should last longer than that, but in some rare cases they don't always do so.

The P/N you are looking for is: 5072440AB, $155 at MoparPartsAmerica. Unfortunately it doesn't appear that the aftermarket parts houses (autozone, etc.) sell it. The OEM part should be made by Gates, IIRC.

Sounds like the Alternator Decoupler taking the tensioner down along with it.... my guess.

Probably should just change both now anyway. Alternator decoupler is only about $65 I think someone said.

Thats what I did, I order both parts. Hopefully that will fix the annoying squeal. I hate to be "that guy". Every time i hear a vehicle squeal i look at the guy and said to myself, dude get that Image fixed.
Thanks a lot everyone for the valuable info you giving me. Hopefully it'll get fixed and now I'm just wondering how long it will take for the parts to get here. :ALONE:

The part # that I used last year was 53013554 AE $ 74.40 list the price I paid $ 53.00 no problem since. It is also very easy to replace alt shaft is left hand thread so all you have to do is spin the new one on hand tight and the turning of the belt will keep it tight. Good luck.

People almost got into a big fight over that last sentence....;)

ow...about a year ago...

Alternator clutch on a 4 banger does more then avoid belt squick at shutdown.

Woow It only took 7 days for the parts to get here! Well ill be calling my mechanic tomorrow to set up a day where i can drop off the crd. Anyone know how long it would take him to do all this? Is this something that i can just wait at the shop for him to fix or while it take a while?

Just ordered a decoupler for mine from IAT-USA... Thanks for the info Tony!

From the KJ Country site, Tony posted this:

TonyCRD wrote:
The clutch is there to reduce stress on the belt. If it's not there the tensioner needs to pick up this constant pulling / stopping friction of the belt.
It then may start to jump up and down and that doesn't do any good for the spring in the tensioner.
Just fit a new one.

HOWEVER: They are not set up for retail sale, so if we as a group want to buy from them, it will have to be a group purchase. They really can only suggest resellers or rebuilders... Unless we want to do a group purchase.

Now here is the real question: On a trip a few days ago, I had my radar detector up and running as a volt meter. (alternate function) The voltage was stable at 14.3v during the day with everything running including the wipers. As soon as I put on the headlights however, the voltage went SPASTIC and started pulsating from ~14.2 to ~15.6 or so. It was pulsating about 2-3 times per SECOND, so it was very hard to read the actual voltage. The headlights, dash lights, and all the interior lighting was pulsing at the same rate. The change must have been so bad this time, that the little lights on the buttons of the EVIC actually went out several times - Like it was rebooting the EVIC console. The display itself never seemed to change though.

The coupler has just hit 80k miles, but is this a possible cause for this behavior? The pulsing has been happening for a while, but it comes and goes. This was the first time that it was constant for hours, and pronounced enough that there was another reaction - the evic lights. Oddly enough, on the return trip, it stopped pulsating again for a while at some point.

Thoughts? The voltage regulator is in the ECU, and I've had the ECU changed out (GDE tune) and it did it with both, so I don't think it is a regulator issue. This is a new battery too.

Mu sqeel is kind of unique. It only does it when I am at a lower elevation, like down in Denver. From a stop light, if I give it say....12 throttle, it will squeel/squal and will stop imediately if I let off the pedal. It won't do it on the highway at all if I go WOT. Been doing it for 45000 miles. I suspect it is belt slippage that is only noticeable when I am down from 8000' and have more torque and horsepower.

Hmm interesting. I was able to get mine at Mopar Parts of America part# 53013554 AE for 52dollars.

Im sure as a group buy they would sell it cheaper. Any info on how much their asking for?

Actually... I had been told the same price, and I was unable to find it on MoparPartsAmerica's site - Didn't have that part number, only the IAT info above. My card doesn't show a pending transaction yet however, so I can't confirm the price yet.

finally got a chance to take the crd to the mechanic today and now the squeal is gone! Told the mechanic to put in the belt tensioner and alternator pully.

Thanks Mr Mopar for providing the part # for the Belt tensioner and every one else. The Belt tensioner is running nice and smooth and there is no moving at all like you see on the video.

I am also experiencing engine bay squealing issues on my 06 CRD at 49k miles.

At 10k under warranty the idle pulley was replaced to no avail. The dealer then replaced the alternator and replaced the belt.

Now, at 49k I am experiencing the same symptoms. The squealing occurs at idle in drive or reverse but not in neutral or park. However, this time I have noticed that it goes away if the AC is switched off and returns if the AC is on (can't say i noticed this before at 10k). I assume it is the AC clutch but cannot make out the source of the noise. The posts on similar problems all seem to lead to the alternator pulley, any comments? I changed the belt a few days ago because it looked warn (shiny on back side) and rotated all pulleys by hand to check for rough rotation but found nothing!

I plan to remove the skid plates tonight and check the AC pulley from below but it seems that a clutch is not offered as a replacement part only the whole compressor.

Do these symptoms still support the alternator pulley problem???

Yes, it sounds like your alternator pulley is locked up. There is a little round plastic cover on the front of that pulley, (or should be) pry that off and see if there's a lot of red clutch dust in there. If you have the belt off, and you can hold the alternator shaft still, the pulley should not turn clockwise, and spin free counterclockwise.
