Post subject:  Metal on Metal Rattling Sound NEED SOME HELP

Hello everyone i have a problem as you can see by the subject of this post. I have and 05 CRD and it seems every time i come to a complete stop i here this metal on metal rattling sound. And it is only when i am on the brakes. I had to have my master cylinder replaced last year because the valving messed up and stuck the brakes on warping all of my rotors. I just really don't want this to happen again i have EBCs now and they costed me a pretty penny and don't want to mess them up. So please let me know if anyone has any idea what this could be i am up for any idea. Side note it seems to be on the drives side can't really hear it on the passenger side unless you really listen. I also have pulled the skid plate off lately to make sure there wasn't something stuck in it.

Your passenger side engine mount may be failed. When this happens there is a loud ground out in drive with the brakes pressed. If you hold the brakes and put it ireverse the noise should disappear. These hydromounts are not the strongest units in the world, we had both of our KJs fail the passenger mount between 70-90,000 miles. Changing it is not too bad as you can just loosen the mount on the top and bottom, then put a board under the engine and lift it with a jack in order to remove the mount. After removing, a failed mount will sound like a bunch of marbles if it is shaken.

Is there anyway to test this without having to actually remove the mount and if not is there a write up on how to remove the mount. And would it be benifical to me to replace both of them.

The easiest test is to warm up the vehicle driving for 20 minutes, then stop while in drive, listen to the noise and feel the steering wheel vibration. Then do the same with it in reverse. If the vehicle sounds/feels worse in drive then the passenger mount is typically failed. Worse noise in reverse should signal a bad drivers side mount. If the noise/vibration is roughly the same the mounts are still good. The noise should be coming from up toward the lower front of the KJ. If the noise is underneath or from the rear, there may be u-joint, driveshaft or other driveline issues...we have one vehicle plagued with these issues! 100% driver induced in our case...

It seems the passenger side is more prone to failure...2 for 2 on our vehicles. We will work on a write-up and post tomorrow on our forum a how-to for changing the mount.

I have a bad one too, so I 'm looking forward to guidance as well. Thanks in advance.

There is an 05 here in Sydney that just had both mounts replaced. The new ones come with the heat shield (like the Wrangler CRD mounts). The turbo downpipe heat is cooking them. I guess you could prolong their life by making up your own heat shield.

I tried your test today on my way home from school and discovered it is bad in both forwards and reverse. But i can only get it to do it while i turn which makes me doubt it could be the mounts. But there is only one way to find out for sure and that is to remove one and test it. Also does anyone know where i can get these mounts other then the stealership?

Just in case someone wants to tackle an engine mount replacement, we have posted a procedure at the following link:
