Looking to buy a CRD Limited :)

I am in the market for an 05-06 Liberty Limited CRD. I have found on that I will be test driving in a few days. Any input on things to look out for, red flags and question for the owner would be greatly appreciated. It is an 06 white limited with grey leather, 70k for $16.9k. I live in California. I currently own a 02 F250 powerstroke with a dp tuner and an 03 tdi jetta with a KERMA TDI tune, egr delete and larger injectors. I like the TDI a lot, but the liberty will replace it. Family of 4 is tight fit in a jetta. I run homebrewed b100 all the time. I love to mod my ride for faster acceleration, fuel economy and longevity. I am new to this forum, but hope to stick around if I get my hands on a CRD.

I will be suprised if you find the KJ Liberty to be roomier than the Jetta TDI. Unless you are looking for 5K towing capacity and/or really need 4WD, I would not go with a CRD. (We needed a small vehicle that can really tow 5K and get 30 MPG commuting. There is nothing other than a KJ CRD.)

Thanks for the input DOC. I need the diesel so i can make my own fuel. No for towing, not for 4wd. My wife is 6' tall and feels our jetta is too low to the ground and a tight fit for her tall frame. I need something other than an excursion to put my family of 4 in. The Liberty CRD seems lke a good fit. Anyone else care to chime in. Thanks

A Passat diesel wagon will have the most interior volume. (I'm only 5'8" and even with no sunroof the interior of the KJ CRD feels cramped to me. At least it will much higher off the ground than your Jetta.) Other diesels to consider is a used Grand Cherokee CRD (Merceded V-6 TD) or a VW Toureg with the new 6-cyl diesel or the "little" VW SUV with a 2 litre TDI.

Hope you have good luck with whatever you settle on.

My grand kids have trouble getting into the back seat and my 6 foot son does not have a lot of head room. Like doc said, if your not going to tow or 4 wheel then the KJ might not be for you. I also owned a 1996 VW Passat TDI and think that might be a better choice. Not to mention better support if you need it :lol:

My stepson is 6' + and has never complained in the front seat, although he does not look all that happy in the back :cry:

I owned the Jetta 3 and the Jetta 4 TDI's. My legs would always hurt after a long trip from the position they are in, so each vehicle has its faults.

I'd look for something more reasonably priced....16.9k for a 70k vehicle is way overpriced. You can probably save several thousand of dollars if you buy out of state.

The back isn't the best for 6+ feet tall people.... But I'm 6'3" and the front is just fine for me. I've got 4-5" of headroom and enough legroom to stretch my legs out all the way on long drives in cruise. We all have different comfort levels, but I've done as much as 7hrs/450 miles in the car without stopping and felt fine when I finally got out.

Well I went against most of your advice and bought it anyways. It's a super clean White with grey leather limited with 70k miles. He was asking $16.9k, but I got it for $14.5k. I just cleaned the MAP sensor ( it was covered completely in dry soot) and will follow it up with some other mods when I find the time. Any recommendations? I want to thank the members of this forum for putting such a good source of information on the internet. I hope I can add something good to this place in the near future.

I'm 6' also, and do not have any problem with my CRD for room. Now stowage space is another thing, mind you. Oi vey!

Air your tires to 38 psi and get the GDE ECO-tune: you'll love it.

Yes, I'd have recommended you get it, too. Glad to hear you got a better price.

I went out-of-state to get mine also, but then again, I live in Rhode Island, so you can hit a friggin' golf-ball and go out of state.

But I took a 5-hr drive up to mid-New Hampshire to get mine. 82K miles for 12K (new turbo, new EGR, new battery and a few other things I forgot about now...). I consider it a good deal, especially since they gave me a great trade-in for my car (06 Magnum V6). Nearly a wash on price.

Ccongratulations. Unplug the MAF sensor to stop the flow of soot till you can get a GDE tune for your new tractor.

06 RED CRD, SAMCO hoses, GDE Eco tune, Fumoto drain valve, Provent, Goodyear TA/KOs, 76K miles and no problems to report.

That's not a bad idea, but I think we might be the only two members since the KJ CRD is pretty foreign in Cali. I hope mine lasts a while too. I live in Chico, where are you at?

congrats on the purchase.... I am sure you will be happy with it. $16.5k was a bit high for 70k miles but $14.5 not so bad.

Mine was $17,900 asking price I got them down like $500 and pushed for more trade than base kelly book on my 2003 out back (7800 vs 8900 i think)

I'm in Pasadena although I do get up to Placerville several times a year. I believe there are 5 or 6 California CRD owners who post here and I do see CRDs occasionally as I drive around. It would be good to get a database of support information including good dealers, good independent mechanics, customizers and biodiesel sources. So far I have not had any work done at a dealer or independent :pepper:

. I have 76K miles and when the 100K service comes, as I have a sister in AZ I was thinking about finding an AZ shop who has done them already rather than trying to invent one here. No good sources of bio near me in southern CA, noting over 5% that I know of.
