Was a little afraid to try at first, but she pulled it like a champ!

Did ~ 50mph most of the time for about 45miles taking the long way to avoid most of the traffic.

I was a little afraid for the transmission taking off from a stop with all that weight back there.

I wish the torque converter would lock in every gear though.

Even up a bit of a good hill temps never climbed. :)

The CRD is a beast, isn't it? 6,500-7,000 lbs. total load back there doesn't seem to bother my CRD much at all. MPGs even stay in the mid-teens.

Kap,

GDEs TCM tune keeps the TC locked above 35 MPH in all gears except when you apply more than 3/4 throttle.

What did you do to "stiffen" the front bar on your Jeep? (No Viagra jokes, please.)

Got some great looks on a 30+ mile rescue of my buddy's '94 2500 Cummins... with his landscaping equipment and misc in back 8)

Most just cannot accept what they see as a mall-crawler carrying any kind of load.

Thinking hard about the trans tune alot lately. :) Maybe in time.

I never did a write up on the swayber as I assume most people wouldn't try this. The factory bar is HARD to bend. I bent it in my pipe bender - I'm sure I was way overstressing the bender also. lol

I researched very hard for an aftermarket swaybar for the jeep due to the excessive body roll she came with, and after getting frustrated with that I took things into my own hands...

This basically sums it up:

Image

I made 3 bends. One in the middle, then one on each side of that to straiten the bar back out.
This does however make the bar shorter so the mounts were pushed to the edge of the bar(or rather the edges of the bar moved in).
By putting the bend in the middle, I estimate 4/5 of the bar is used in the spring action of the swaybar now thereby making it stiffer and harder to torsion.

Thats it, the jeep now has noticeably less body roll and is much more fun (and safer) to drive around corners. :D

Mark,

where did you get the idea to do this or has this been done before?

Reason for my question is that my mechanic thinks I am crazy for wanting to bend a perfectly good antisway bar.

Before I say anything else I should mention this. You will have less front suspension flex for off road if you do this mod. Somthing to keep in mind. I plan on lockers so don't care if i don't flex much up there as I can rock back and fourth and b ok...besides the rear suspension has a TON of flex with the extended length shocks I have on it and 3" lift :) I may end up making a swaybar quick disconnect for the jeep sometime as well. There are none out there available for the libertys that I know of so far. We'll see how that goes later on if I get done with all my other projects. You know I have a LIST of em. lol

As for the Idea, I just came up with it, I have the mind of an engineer, what can I say. I think instead of sleep. LOL Sometimes I wish I could sleep, but lay in bed and just think untill i figure out a solution instead. ha ha.

I could not figure out any other way to strengthen our swaybar. I first thought of shortening the ends to decrease the leverage the car has on the bar, but the ends are curvy and not possible that I could see.

On my dodge charger I am doing just that, changing the mount location for the bar end links closer to the bar to increasse stiffness like this:

I calculated a 14% increase in stiffness with the Dodge Charger modification. Doing this project after I complete the T-stats. :D

Just an FYI H&R makes front and rear sway bars for the KJ.
