ok everyone. Over the last week the CRD has started dumping coolant out the overflow of the coolant reservoir. According to the temp gauge I am not overheating. Overflow is worse when running the A/C but it still does it when A/C is off.

Stealership checked the reservoir cap to see if it held pressure and it didn't. replaced that but it didn't help.

Thoughts?

I forgot to mention that I have the GDE eco tune. Does the eco tune have all the update temp guage calibration stuff?

The temp gauge is not modified in the tune. Is the coolant getting dark in color or is it still red? Over pressure cooling systems can be caused if there is a cracked head, leaking gasket or a blockage in the system. Is the coolant bottle deformed where the cap connects? Was the coolant recently changed?

No the reservoir is not deformed at the cap and the coolant has not been changed recently. Coolant still appears to be red.

had the #3 glow plug replaced a while back and they had to go back in and replace the EGR tube gasket because the mechanic reused the original and it leaked. This over flow issue started sometime after the gasket was replaced on the tube. Not sure if that would cause any issues.

Could be the coolant lines going to the EGR valve are kinked after a tech who wasn't getting paid to do it over slammed that bish back in.

Last time I had this problem it was the head gasket :(. Not on the CRD I might add.

After you have checked the other tips in the thread for leaks including the EGR cooling.
Do you have any foam or small bubbles in the coolant?
A bad head gasket or cracked head can leak very small amounts of exhaust into the cooling system. Unlike a gasser, the diesel will not trigger the chemical tester used on gassers to find head gasket/cracked head leaks.
If you don't find foam or small bubbles, you may have a piece of debris under the coolant tank cap that is causing the coolant to leak out the top. This has happened to my Wife's TDI a couple times and cleaning the cap seal fixed it.

I used to have a VW IDI 1.6L diesel that lost very little coolant and was always a pain to keep it from running hot. Adding an extra fan and other tricks to flow more air through the radiator helped a little, but never fixed it. Thermostats were changed with no positive results. The head was pulled checked for cracks and the head gasket replaced and the problem persisted. My son trashed the engine driving like some teenagers do, and I swapped it for a new 1.9 IDI long block (that later evolved into the early TDI after they changed the head and pistons). My over heating problems went away after swapping the long block and never came back. The head or one of the cylinder walls must have had a hidden crack that was never found.
Hope you have a simple and stupid problem.

Good Luck

It may be possible that the EGR gasket is leaking at the cooler but I can't be sure. If I can remember I will look it up tomorrow when I'm in my garage.

Problem seems to be solved. My electric fan took a dump. Dealership replaced (I bought the fan from mopar parts amercia $212 instead of $332 from dealer) and the coolant overflow issue seems to be gone.

How does replacing the electric fan cure the problem when you stated it was not overheating?? Just wondering.

Your guess is as good as mine. I have only driven it a short distance since I got it back from the dealer. In that short trip I did not dump any coolant. Before it would. I am going to put about 300 miles on it tomorrow so I will have a better idea if it is fixed. I will keep everyone posted.

I have an aftermarket gauge installed and i can tell you right now i can it 240-250 f before the stock gauge goes past 12 oclock.

I have located the probe in various coolant lines and i get the same measurements.

I have long suspected (based on the handfull of cracked heads and reports of loosing coolant etc) that a wildly inaccurate coolant gauge may not be that uncommon.

Could this be the result of Chrysler's "recalibration" of the temperature guage to solve overheating problems

Reading a few posts down the fan did not cure the problem and he traded it in :dizzy:
