I have read about shuddering etc when the torque converter fails. We were on the expressway and the rpms jumped up and it was like I had it in neutral.

It is in the dealer 200 miles from home. Could it be the TC?

Thanks

Could be a few things. Was there a code?

Could be a few things. Was there a code? Suddenly jumping out of gear is more likely to be a control or solenoid failure than the TC. Once stopped would the vehicle drive at low speed. Did you try forcing the tranny into learn mode (ie power it off by disconnecting the battery), etc etc. Lots of steps to go through to debug this. Much more info required.

How many miles has your fuel filter been through?

Sounds like loss of power due to your fuel filter needing replacement.

Many of us have experienced what you are experiencing and it was due to a dirty fuel filter, lack of fuel reaching the high pressure fuel pump due to a clogged filter.

Great Questions. I don't remember if a check engine light came on. We were on the expressway for about one minute and the Jeep was only running for a few minutes before that. We got up to about 55 and then nothing. The engine was running and responsive to throttle, but it acted like it was in neutral. We coasted over to the side. I turned it off a couple times and had the same response, nothing. The engine started, ran normal, air conditioning worked fine, but it acted like it was in neutral. I did not disconnect the battery.

I even tried to shift the transfer case, but nothing.

I don't know if there is a code yet, have to hear from the dealer.

About 30000 miles ago they replace the trans pump and clutches. The fuel head and filter was replaced about 20000 miles ago.

I still have a couple thousand miles on the extended warranty, but really want them to fix it so I can make it home with it.

Sounds like you went into limp mode, from not enough fuel being delivered to the high pressure pump due to a clogged fuel filter.

Yup, first time it happens you think it is a tranny problem, actually an air in fuel problem or a plugged fuel filter.

Thanks for the feedback. My wife, who spent time with the car waiting for me to pick her up, does not remember any warning or check engine lights on while she was sitting there.

I know limp mode is designed to protect the rig, but I had not heard that it will prevent the vehicle from moving at all?

Maybe the bolts holding the torque converter to the flexplate came out or sheared off.

Could be the TC. My first one made a bang when leaving a light. It would move just a little so I could get it out of traffic. :dizzy:

Well, the dealer says that the input shaft had all the splines sheared off???

I've actually had a car where the TC bolts came off. On that one the previous owner didn't use the right nuts and bolts. At least that was a quick and cheap fix.

WOW, that's not a good thing :dizzy: It sounds like our tractor engines have found another weak link :frankie:

How many miles and what torque converter does it have?

It still has the original 2006 TC with a little over 66000 miles. I just wonder how that happens.

Chrysler underestimated the torque pulses of a 4 cylinder 2.8L diesel engine. They detuned it from a original 301 foot pounds at 2k rpms to 260 with F37 but it appears that might not have been enough for the TC and transmission. But it did make it past the 36k warranty the 06 had so maybe they accomplished what they were trying to do :banghead:

So... new TC, trans pump etc. They hope to have it together today.

When my tranny in the CRD did the exact same thing that you described.... engine running but like in neutral, all that happened was that the spin on filter in the tranny fell off!!! At least mine was a simpler fix.

It could be just a defective unit, how many others sheared the spines off of a tranny that can handle a hemi?

That's what I was thinking

Well the extended warranty has paid for itself many times over. The other good thing is I get rid of the original TC.

Sounds like limp mode, mine did the same thing when it was shooting fuel like old faithful out of the #4 injector, actually went into limp coming off a ramp and then shut down.
