Hi,
I am getting the MIL lamp on and off from time to time. I read the code and get EGR flow restricted. Has anyone run into this? My guess is that the EGR cooler and or the EGR valve is partially clogged with carbon.
My plan is to remove both the cooler and valve with the hope of cleaning.
Thoughts.

John

It is also possible that your Flow Control Valve is stuck and thus not creating the venturi effect into the intake for the EGR.

What is the purpose of the flow control valve? The whole idea of an EGR system on a turbocharged diesel bothers me. Where do they get the pressure differential to pump exhaust into the intake when the intake is at best at ambient pressure and under engine load at considerable positive pressure.

From what I can gather from the many posts that deal with this subject, the flow control valve (other than being used to shutdown the engine and prevent a runaway) is angled in some situations to create a venturi effect in the intake that sucks exhaust gases into the intake mixture (keeping in mind that the charged air is under pressure) and no pump is used with this system.

Experts please correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks for the response.
I think I agree with you on the dual purpose of the intake "flow control" valve. The more I read and think about this the more I am convinced that they needed it to choke off (throttle) the intake air in order to create a lower intake pressure than the pre-turbine exhaust pressure. Otherwise the EGR path would not function. It strikes me as a total detriment to the process of turbocharging. I hope this path is non functional at heavy engine loads. The intake flow control valve is not needed as a safety to prevent runaway as CRD engines are electronically controlled. The injectors can't function without the ECM and the ECM watches and controls engine RPM. The stock ECM limits max RPR to something under 5k.

I will post my investigation of this problem when and if I figure it out. :-))

You are right on both counts. It's really only a light load thing.

The runaway prevention thing is a red herring IMO. I don't remember any cases where our engine was overspeeding running on oil sucked past the rings or out the turbo seal.
