Hi, I just tried my cruise control today and it doesn't event want to turn on. No light in the dash whatsoever. I tried to read as many posts as I could, checked all my light bulbs and everything seems fine. I disconnected the battery for 45 minutes with no success. I also tried to hold the button for 20 seconds, no luck. Any idea anyone?

There is a "clock spring", sometimes referred to as a "slip ring", etc that is located behind your steering wheel it is basically a wrapped wire harness that allows connection of everything on the steering wheel to the rest of the car and still lets the wheel turn lock to lock. It is possible the contact for the cruise control broke inside that ring. If so, the rest (horn, airbag, volume controls, etc are sure to follow.

Also check and make sure your rear brake lights function, some cars if the rear lights are disconnected or out the cruise will not function due to an open in the break circuit. Also check the upper brake light. Not sure if our jeeps do this, but worth a check.

There also may be a cruise control module that is seperate from the main ECU that controls the cruise. Not sure if this is the case for our jeeps, but possible.

I'm sure others will chime in on this.

Good luck!

- Mark

Rear brake lights work. I erased all the codes but my code reader is not derb2. May still be something hidden.

This has happened to me, after I washed the engine. It started working again after a couple of days. I have heard others with the same problem and it resolved itself after drying out. Hopefully this is this case for you.

I changed the fuel filter and dropped some fuel in that corner, any relations you think?

Mine didn't work when I purchased it, did some research and found that sometimes if the battery has been disconnected for an extended time, the ecu forgets that the cruise is supposed to be enabled... I checked the clockspring and all other relevant wiring right up to the ecu and it tested ok. Had the GDE tune and low and behold, the cruise worked again.. I think that originally, Keith at GDE explained this "forgotten cruise phenomena" to me.. Good luck, a dealer can turn it back on with their scan tool also... for a fee  ---If you don't have a GDE tune, I highly recommend it!

Back online today. Just installed a GDE ecu and it didn't make the cruise control work (at least not right away). I did a bit of digging and my clock spring is good. Checked the switches and disassembled them. Very easy, just use a screwdriver and pry carefully on the side where the pivot is. the cover should pop out. Then, remove the rubber part of the switch (just like a remote control) and clean the gold contacts using a pencil eraser. Remove any dust from the eraser by blowing on it and wiping it, then reassembled the switch and Voila! My cruise control works again. Those switches can't really go bad. Only some stuff (even a hair) can go in there and keep it from working properly.

I had the same issue a few months ago. It was the clock spring, no codes, no air bag light, horn worked..ect. Not a cheap part to replace.

I checked the clock spring and everything is fine. Looked like I had a thin film on one of the switch contact (on/off). Works good now!

I currently have my kj at the dealer, they claim to be replacing a module, my cruise wouldn't turn on like yours. last week the clock spring broke, had to get it towed to the dealer, wouldn't start. Glad I have extended warranty. 5 years no problems and in the last 2 months my kj has had
BCM replaced
Elec. fan replaced
Fan cluth replaced (these 3 items due to A/C not cooling)
Clock spring replaced
Steering column replaced
Now the module for the cruise control inop replaced

Huh???? There's no cruise control module. You have the switches on the steering wheel linked directly to the ecu through the clock spring. Do you have the p/n of what they changed?

Let me know, I can send you a copy of the service manual wiring if they don't believe you but it's very strange. The only electronic control module involved in the crd is the ecu! If they changed the ecu for an inop cruise control, they're pretty dumb. All they had to do is to reset the cruise control flag. Strange... Let me know, I'm very interested.

Got my truck back yesterday, turned out to be a short in a wire at the firewall.
