Today I drove to the store came home parked the jeep for a few hours, got back in later to run some errands and when I put it into drive it seemed like it did not want to go like it should. I carfully drove to the highway and noticed when I got up to my final overdrive gear it would not upshift to that gear. It down shifts ok but seems like it is sluggish from a start in drive. I checked the fluid and it is full and that nice pink color. I just ordered the filter kit from my local Nappa guy and I am getting ready to change the fluid and the filters. Any thoughts on this problem like maybe a new torque converter needed? |

Changing fluid and filters is the first place to start. The torque converter will chadder if bad most of the time providing something else inside like the stator or other component inside is not trashed, chaddering is due to a defective pump that needs to be fixed or replaced along with the torque converter. No chadder or failure to lock up in the other gears like 3rd and 4th, look else where, you may be lucky. You are ordering a first rate filter kit from NAPA/Wix, but be very careful that you seat both the filters properly, some have not and have had drain back problems. I do not use the cork gasket and after cleaning off both the trans and pan, apply RTV and tighten up the bolts. If you are using the stamped steel pan, I would put on the pan, finger tighten the bolts and don't add any fluid yet. Then, let the RTV cure for a couple hours, now, tighten the bolts up the rest of the way. If the pan is warped, straighten it first. Having pink oil on the driveway is discussing to say the least. Make sure you use the ATF+4 fluid, experiment with snake oil at your own risk, both Chrysler and SunCoast will not approve any other fluid , add what you think you need based upon what drains out and what you can get in(mine takes more 17 1/2 quarts total with the extra deep pan and SunCoast). Then Idle in park for a few and recheck add any more if needed. Put the trans into reverse and hold the brake for 30 seconds. Then back out of the driveway put the shift lever in 1st and drive for at least 1/2 block or 30 seconds, repeat in second and drive. Pull the stick in park with the engine running, recheck fluid and add if needed. Now, go on a drive around town that has a lot of stop and go for at least 20 Min, pull into a lot, keep the engine running with trans in park and check your fluid level, add more if needed. if your honey like riding shot gun and go shopping with you driving her around, good time to do it. Took me three of the drive around town for twenty min with a lot of stop go, before mine settled down, of course, I had just installed the SunCoast and complete Transgo kit. When the fluid level is stable, drive the CRD the way you plan to and teach it how to shift. Any of the following will require you reteach your TCM. 1) New tune, any new tune, even a dreaded Dealer ECM Rape/Flash. 2) Reflashed or replacement TCM. 3) Major trans work including Torque Converter, front pump, or valve mods. 4) Fluid change or adding a trans cooler that may put an air bubble into the system. I learned the TCM Slow Learn from Dodge Dakota forums where they made their 5.7L Hemi with a 545RFE transmissions (same trans as CRD) into 5 speeds instead of 4 speeds by swapping in a Grand Cherokee 5.7L Hemi TCM. Doing the Quick learn for a Dakota would have not allowed the trans to become a 5 speed. I did the slow learn on my Experimental TCM, like a teenager, it took some work, but I like it now. |

Well I hope you find out why and post it here. Mine has a mind of its own. It work great for weeks then pick a day to act up. I found that it is not down shifting and starting out in a higher gear then wont up shift into 5th or overdrive at highway speeds. Codes show its a speed sensor or soleniod. |

Well it pulled a new code for a sensor regarding pressure in the transmission. I drained the pan and lo and behold the flat filter was separated the fluid was ok but that is probably why it was not shifting correctly. I also installed a 1/2 inch drain plug so I can drop the fluid into a proper container next time instead of out of the back corner of the pan until it is light enough to remove without making a mess. Everything went back together great and it is shifting better than ever. I hope all is well. I do want to swap out the torque converter to the newer european style unit. |
