Any ideas on this would be most appreciated.
Last winter we were heading home from the In-laws in the Libby and hit some black ice on the freeway, spun a 360 and hit the concrete barrier pretty hard on the passenger side front corner.

Body damage wasn't too bad but it pushed stuff around in the front end enough to damage the intercooler which was then replaced (by Shop 1). About a week after I get it back the turbo goes out (a sound I hope not to hear twice in my life) and also realize it has been burning a lot of oil. I get the turbo replaced by Shop 2, who says it looks like Shop 1 didn't do a very good job putting all of the intercooler tubing back together properly. Shop 2 also lets me know that the oil is really dirty and that I should try flushing more regularly than usual for a while. I did the next oil change at 1000 miles without issue, then waited until 3000 miles to do the next, except ended up burning a full quart of oil then changing out "really" dirty oil.

Shop 2 now wants me to keep flushing the oil every 500 miles to see if I can clean it up. A couple ideas I've got from other posts are to check for air leaks in the intercooler tubing or possibly installing an oil bypass filter to help clean things out; but wanted to see if anyone else may be willing to suggest any other possible ways to get it to stop fouling and burning the oil.
Thanks.

What is their criteria for deciding the oil is dirty? Is it just because it's black? Because these motors will blacken the oil in a few hundred miles - it's normal.

Check that you're not overfilling the oil. Don't put it up to the full line, keep it at the middle or min. I notice that mine will use oil down to about min and then just stop there.

x2 Until my GDE tune to kill the EGR (I know it still works so don't tell me it isn't dead!) my oil was black after the first few miles. It's actually normal looking now that 3 changes have gone by with the tune.

Do you have extra smoke that could indicate the oil leaking into the turbo?

Do the guys changing the oil not realize it is a diesel? Unless you have done the EHM (elephant hose modification, use search, read noob guide); your oil will be black. I do not know how GDE could possibly clean the oil (not why I bought it, don't see how it could) and I won't know until next year sometime (3 more changes will be almost 20 miles from now). Frankly, as long as you take any combustion gas and reroute it through the engine, your oil will pick it up. Your oil SHOULD be so black (and stain unless you use simple orange or equivalent) that... well, it's gonna be dark :jester:

Every 500 miles? Please. My butt can't cash checks like that with 0w-40 M1 @ $6-7.5/qt. Do NOT go over 6.4 quarts measured. Your Libby will eat it and you will add more wondering where the first cup went. Measure it, do not go by the dipstick. Measure your addition of 6.4 qts (oil filter empty) and notch your dipdtick if you have to. If you follow your dipstick (by ignoring my please to measure and pour), you will likely overfill it and blow even more sh:furious:t through it and the vicious cycle repeats itself.

If your mechanic :dizzy: does not know that the oil will be black with the pollution controls on, that should be a clue he should not be touching your diesel. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Good luck, hope I don't come off too brash, I just don't want someone to take your money.
My :2cents: for you,
Boilermaker2
