No it's not what you think (ok, so the title is a shameless deception). This past Friday I did the annual engine bay wash down with engine cleaner as part of the fall vehicle detailing. I had to leave on a 4 hour trip right after the Jeep was washed. As I pulled out of the driveway I got the typical WIF light because of the wet plug. This usually goes out once the engine bay gets warmed up. Well, about a mile down the road all the dash lights started flickering and then the gauges went dead. This is new, I thought to myself, and pulled over to wiggle the computer connections under the hood... no improvement. At idle the gauges would flicker but as the engine revved, they would go out all together. I also happened to notice that the alternator was very hot. I plugged the scanner in and got a code for voltage overcharge. I started to return home to change vehicles and the speedometer needle started climbing to 100, 110, 120, all the way around to the peg. By the time I got home a couple of minutes latter, the battery was spitting acid and steam out through a seam.

The Jeep sat all weekend drying out and this morning all the electrical gremlins were fine except for the speedometer. When sitting with the ignition off the needle points straight down. When the ignition is engaged, it swings clockwise to hit the peg. I have disconnected the battery, cleared all the codes, and done everything I can think of to get the needle back to where it belongs. The scanner reads the correct speed as I drive down the road, so I know that the problem isn't in the computer itself.

Before I drill a hole in the plastic gauge cover to push the needle back to zero, does anyone have any suggestions about what to do.

Wish I had an answer for you. I just came in the CRD section to post up and say your post. I cleaned my engine a couple days ago and have had the engine light ever since. Thought it would go out once it dryed out but its still there. Don't have a code reader and the key trick doesn't seem to work on my 06 so I have no clue. Unlike yours, mine seems fine besides the bright light on the dash.

Any suggestions for either of us?

(moral of the story-dirty engines are much happier???)

Scott

Although this TSB is not for Libertys, it worked.

Model year(s): 1999-2000

Description: A condition may exist where the speedometer or tachometer may be inoperative due to gauge needle being wrapped around the wrong side of the stop peg.

Details: This can happen in situations where low battery voltage is present such as jump starting a dead battery. The instrument cluster can cut out if voltage drops below 9.5 volts, causing the needle to drop on the wrong side of the gauge.

1. With the ignition switch in the off position, depress and hold the odometer-reset button.
2. Turn the ignition switch to the run position, continue holding the odometer reset button until the cluster needles start to move, then release the reset-button. (Do not allow the ignition switch to enter the start position) The gauge needles will sweep in both directions and come to rest in the correct position relative to the stop peg.

What is the PSI rating of your pressure washer?
It may be too much for the plug seals to handle and as we all know water and electrical equipment don't get along.

Bingo! It read 21 volts.

One suggestion, do not wash the motor of before going on a long trip.
Sort of like wearing clean undies when one goes out for the evening. It is bad luck.

Thanks for the tech tip.

Every now and then Ford gets something right. The Side Oiler was one of those things.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. I just washed both my CRD engines with degreaser and a garden hose. Been a week with no problems but now I'm knocking on wood. I covered the ECM, TCM, and fuse box with aluminum foil before spraying anything though. Did you cover any components?
