Post subject:  An Answer for Tranny Shudder?

Reading thru the latest issue of TDR, it looks like the guys with Dodge Cummins pickups sometimes experience tranny shudder similar to what we have.

Their explanation is that it's caused by noise generated in the wiring system by the alternator. It happens at certain positions on the acceleration position sensor and interferes with the signal sent to the PCM which controls torque converter lockup, and causes the hunting or shudder at certain accelerator pedal positions.

Their easy fix is to order a noise filter kit and put it in the wiring between the acceleration sensor and the PCM. Apparently carried by a company called Diesel Transmission Technologies, http://www.dieseltrans.com, on their Dodge price list for $47.

Their other recommended fix is to install shielded wire between the sensor and the PCM, or reroute the existing wires by themselves in their own loom.

Hmm, might be worth a try.

Doesn't seem like the most obvious solution, but when is it ever.
You be the guinea pig and let us know how it went.

Guess it's worth a try. First off, I'll try calling this company tomorrow and see if you can even connect this noise filter in the same place on a CRD. Next would be to look on the service manual CD and see if I can find out which bloody wires they are, and if they're even accessible.

Definitely keep us posted! I'd love to rid myself of that for $47 or less!

Guess I need one of those little round wooden things my grandfather used to talk about - a round tuit.

Just been too bloody busy with other stuff the last few days to pursue it any further. Like remembering I've got 20 new batteries in the back of my electric that needed cables made up for them. Good upper body exercise, crimping cast copper lugs onto 2/0 welding cable. Subaru was way past due for inspection, sister trying to purchase a house, etc, etc.

I did call the company and spoke with one of their techs. According to the service manual, there's two signal wires from the pedal, one to the ECM, and another to the tranny control module. According to their tech, you'd need to install the filter in the wire to the tranny module, solder connection being preferable.

But, after finding out that '05 was the first year they used an electronically modulated converter clutch with this tranny, there's the definite possibility it IS a software issue. They use this same tranny and EMCC on the '05 Dakotas. I'd like to check the Dakota forums first and see if they're having the same problems, and what if any solution they've found. A little leg work might save us some grunt work.
