Had the CEL come on, went to Pep Boys and their scanner says P0700 (generic transmission code) and P00876 (P0786 Shift/Timing Solenoid Range/Performance). A month and over 1K miles ago I had the trans serviced with the new filters and ATF, good guys and I saw the ATF they use. The Jeep seems to run well but I wonder what to do next? I do not want to go to a dealer. Do I wait for a operational problem to show up?

Recently there's been some instances of random transmission codes and problems caused by a wiring harness being burned through by the exhaust pipe. But first check the fluid first.

I had that code and 0731. I read in a service bulletin that they were caused by using a defective transmission coolant line filter, which has since been redesigned. Took the CRD to a dealer thinking that this work would be covered by my extended warranty. The wrench read the serial number of the tranny and said that the service bulletin did not apply. The recommendation, however, was to do just what the bulletin said to do: replace both filters and the fluid. Dealer wanted $300+ to do a "transmission service". I said that I'd do the work. Service Manager said that was fine, and that he would clear the codes for free after I'd done the work. When I returned to take him up on his offer, he said that he'd have to charge me. So I said I'd wait for the codes to clear themselves (40 starts from cold).

Since I don't use the CRD that much it took several months for the codes to clear, and I doubted that they ever would. So I read the diagnostic procedure, which should have been followed by the dealer's mechanic. It's all in the Service Manual, very methodical step-by step. It requires a special transmission tester.

If you do take it to a dealer, have a copy of the Service Manual pages which detail the tests.
Demand to see the test values. Otherwise, you'll probably get a lazy mechanic who will go on his hunches while you pay for his experimentation.

Well strange things do happen. I tried to clear the codes by disconnecting the battery but either the code was saved or regenerated. The Pep Boys guy's scanner didn't clear the transmission code either. I tried the four restarts. Then later that night the CEL just went away. No codes now. So I'm inclined to think that is a random thing. Will drive it and hope for the best. 80K miles now, want to get somewhere near 150K before a 'preventative' trans rebuild. Is there an emoticon for hopeful?
