EDIT:

Map online, see quote below from CATCRD:

Guys, I made a shared Google map so we can add our locations and capabilities, and get an idea of where the CRD folks are mainly located, for possible GTGs and the like.

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF&m ... db1c6558d2

If you have a google or gmail account and are logged in, just click Edit, grab a blue place marker at the top of the map and place it as close to your true location as you feel comfortable letting people know. Be sure to click Save and Done when you are done.

If this works we can take the map private and make it invite only so people would be more comfortable putting a phone number in it for instance.

How would you guys feel about putting together a list of willing CRD owners to help other CRD owners out. The idea is that we can make a list of willing people who can help out with a garage/driveway etc in different parts of the country for when we might be on travel.

The idea being, lets say I am on travel in seattle, have a powersteering pump go out, and need a place to work, I can jump online, find the contact info of some peoples in the area, and get in touch with them for a place to work.

Part of it would be that willing persons would need to give contact info such as a cell phone so that when they needed to be contacted they could - and not be subject to the whims of us checking onto LOST. If we did generate this list it would need to be kept private obviously, so I am thinking that several people would be "keepers of the list" and could dispense contact info.

The other way to go which would require work from someone other than myself would be to put the list into a database and allow us to search by location, that way the information is kept private untill needed.

Thoughts?

I think it is more then a good idea especially in small towns. Yes i think we do need to secure it some how so a google bot doesn't get a hold of them. I am all in for it i have a full shop just missing lifts. Got a rubber tired loader though capable of lifting a semi easily  . And all the air tools a man could ever need. This is also a great idea because the contact person would know where to get parts who to talk to and possibly put them up till they arrive.

Sounds good. The BMWCCA publishes an actual book with this info in it for BMW owners to keep in their glove box. It's got your name, phone, and the level of assistance you are willing to provide. From tools to a place to crash for the night.

Yup, VW Vanagons have a similar setup, "Vanagon rescue squad" searchable by area, and the kind of help your willing to provide.

Actually, this could be a good tool even for non CRD liberty's, but I don't care about them.

So do we have anyone here in IT that would be able to setup a database to be hosted on a website? I have all the hosting space we would ever want, but I'm not an IT person.

Great idea. I used to be on the Vanagon list. I don't have work space to offer, but would be willing to put someone up.

Yep. Some interesting privacy/security concerns there. Could be something that's accessible only to people that are LOST lifetime members and you must authenticate to the board to see it. Could also be really complicated and be a facebook group or something like that, but I'd prefer not to use a third party's access control system (as they can typically always choose to sell it).

Count me in. Port Neches, TX (SE TX, near Beaumont) the majority of the time, have hand tools but no garage; Baton Rouge, LA some weekends, have limited tools there but a 2-car garage workspace. Someone is welcome to crash at either place but if you're in Baton Rouge you will need a sleeping bag, since that house is empty. Both are convenient to I-10 and I-12 if someone were travelling that route.

I'd rather not have the DB on Facebook, as I am not a member and have no plans to join.

I like this idea:

I second the idea of putting it in the Members only area. Supporting this forum show a certain level of commitment to providing aid.

Don't want to give my phone number out, but I sync my cell phone to the email account I have linked to LOST. I will see messages from anyone who emails me using the link on my posts as long as I'm in cell coverage.

Be nice to figure out a way to assign a validity level to each entry. Validity would come directly from others on the list. Could be as simple as LOST join date, Last post date, number of posts. Some forum software have a widget or add-on to allow forum members to indicate if a member has helped them out.

Just noticed that only two of those that posted to this thread are lifetime members. Guess that won't work, or it will be a short list.

OR, it will be good motivation to join :)

I would join as a lifetime member or whatever, but I am already doing that on a few forums. I know its not expensive, but I just rather not be paying on 5 different forums, since 4 is my max that I want to do that on.

Anyways you can contact me through here if you are ever in the area and I will be willing to help out.

This is getting a bit complicated, we may be needing advice from a lawyer pretty soon.
