My 5 1/2 year experiment with the CRD is over. I traded it today. It was impossible to sell. I had it on Craig's list where I live in NH and in the Boston listing. I also had it in local papers. In over 3 weeks of listing I got exactly 3 inquiries. One guy said he was coming over then called and said he had talked to a dealer who told him NOT to get a CRD. I tried to explain to him that if the dealer had a CRD to sell it would be the best car in the universe, etc, but you can't get past a bad recommendation from a Jeep dealer. A second guy called but never came over. A third was interested, but lives in MO. So, I traded it today. I got $ 9,600 for it from a Toyota dealer on a new Tacoma. After doing research on KBB/Edmunds/Autotrader/Etc I listed the Jeep at 11,800 then lowered to 11,300 then 10,900 and finally 9,700. Since the dealer gave me 100 less than the final listing I took the deal. I congratulate anyone who can get the $ 13,000 shown on KBB, I know I could not.
In general, my ownership was a positive experience. However, I just had over $ 1200 in warranty work for a new EGR and ECU (second EGR in 8,000 miles). I was looking at $ 500 for a GDE tune which I firmly believes it needs to keep going and $ 700 for tires. In addition, the prospect of a $ 1200 timing belt change was not pleasant. The last service kept the Jeep at the dealer for 3 days waiting for parts and based on my discussion with the dealer, parts are becoming difficult to get. So, I knew it was time for it to go. As I have neither the time, nor skill to work on the car myself I have to rely on the dealer, or some other mechanic (try to find a diesel tech who will work on the Jeep-I know I did and could not) to keep it running.
My old 2wd Nissan finally died and instead of getting a cheap pickup and putting more money into the Jeep I decided that it was time for a change and get one vehicle for both duties. As I am not impressed with Chrysler's handling of the CRD issues I have no interest in another Jeep product (even if the alleged Jeep pickup comes out) and would not get the vaporware promised Mahindra diesel for at least 3 model years post introduction. So, in small pickups the Tacoma was the only option, in my opinion.

). In complete and total honesty.. I'm in the exact same boat. I love this Jeep. It's so enjoyable in so many ways. But from a purely financial standpoint... it scares me to death everytime I take it out on the road. If something internal to the engine breaks, or if the turbo dies, I am totally screwed. I'll be making payments each month on something that just sits in the driveway.. because there is NO WAY I can come up with the thousands of dollars it would take to fix this thing. For that reason and that reason alone, I am also keeping my options open.
