When I first bought this Jeep with the CRD it burned up oil like crazy. I had to check it once a week because in two weeks time the oil level would be below the "min" mark on the dipstick.

I switched to 5W40 synthetic diesel oil (Particularly Shell Rotella) and ever since I burn no oil anymore. I recently have driven my Jeep 1,500 miles round trip to Florida, 500 miles round trip to western KY for a four-wheeling weekend trip, and thousands of miles otherwise. And still, my oil level is at full. I have 17,250 miles on my CRD now and it seems to not burn up any oil at all.

I'm sure a lot of this is because the engine is broken in now. But I wonder how much the 5W40 oil helped? I know one thing...the Rotella is working great so I don't plan on changing. (I'm glad I found some at Wal-Mart for my next change coming up).

I'm changing too. I get free oil from the dealership where I got mine, but it's not worth it. I'm switchin on my next change. I already asked them and they're more than happy to put in the Shell or Mobil synth options.

Thanks for the report LiberyCRD. Just one more nail in the coffin for OME oil.

I just changed mine, don't remember off hand, but it was about 5000 miles I think. Anyway I had never had to add oil to the CRD and when I checked it the day before I change the oil it still was showing only about 3/16 of an inch from top line where it had been since first check at about the 500 mile mark.

Must be a big difference in way they are driven or something. :?

ISo far I have had to only add oil once and since the first oil change at 6K I haven't had to add since .

Noticed the same on mine. I'd still be willing to bet that the major difference is that the CI-4 rated stuff has a lower volatility rating than the 0W40 CF stuff, designed for closed CCV system, and the reason most of us are seeing reduced oil consumption is less getting sucked thru the CCV.

With the Rotella, it's taken nearly 4000 miles for the Provent to get loaded up enough that I'm starting to get oil on a regular basis in the drain tube, just within this last tank.

I switched to Shell Rotella T 5W-40 at 1,746 miles and my oil consumption went to zero. I'm now at 5,700 miles. Prior to the switch I had used 3/4 of a quart of the OEM Mobile One 0W-40.

I have beena loyal Pennzoil user for every vehicle I have ever owned. And, my rigs have always run well and had minimum engine problems.

Does Pennz make oil for the CRD, and has anyone used it?

I searched the Pennzoil website and they do have a 5w-40 Euro full synthetic oil that may be suitable. I couldn't find any specifications on this oil; you may have better luck.

I would stick with a full synthetic oil that is specified for diesel applications. I would choose either a 0w-40 or a 5w-40 (I'm actually now leaning towards a 5w-40). My preference is to also use an oil that can deal with 10,000 mile OCI's as I will put alot of miles annually on my Liberty.

Right now my choice of oil will either be Amsoil 5w-40 European formula or Mobil 1 Truck & SUV 5w-40.

You want oil that is CI-4 rated. Currently in the USA that is Mobil 1 Truck & SUV (also called Mobil Delvac 1) and Shell Rotella Full Synthetic (blue bottle).

I gave a lot more details and links in this post:

Amsoil 5w-40 European formula would also be considered suitable.

Its nothing but Rotella T for me from now on. I dumped the Mobil 1 after 1000 miles on my wife's KJ. I plan on doing 10k OCIs which is fairly conservative for this quality oil.

You may have little choice but Rotella 5W-40 CI+ until Mobile gets their diesel oil back on shelves. BTW, my oil consumption dropped quite a bit when I switched to Mobile 1 5W-40 T&SUV CI4 oil. My Provent had lots of oil in it with the factory fill, which I assume was Mobile 0W-40. Provent started taking much, much longer to gather oil once I switched to M1 5W-40 at 5000 miles. Now at 16K miles, no measureable oil usage. Down a quart on the factory fill by 3000 miles. Blow-by on factory fill could looked like a humidifier if you pulled the hose loose from the oil-separator. Not impressed with 0W-40 oil, Mobile 1 or not.

Just checking at the local Canadian Tire (a big national chain in Canada affectionately known also as "Crappy Tire") - they actually stock Rotella 100% synthetic in 0W40 weight.
They do not stock 15W40.
The 0W40 would in my opinion better match the factory spec although the 15W40 might solve known issues however it would be a bit thicker during cold starts. Any opinions out there as to which might be preferable?

IIRC the 15W-40 is NOT synthetic. Check here:

http://www.rotella.com/products/

I couldn't find any 0W-40 listed. They have a 0W-30 that's a synthetic blend. The only true synthetic they make is the 5W-40.

Chris,
Have a peek on this web site. Shell has a lot more to offer than I ever imagined.

No oil in CCV lines with 5w-40 Rotella. Did I waste my money by buying and installing a CCV filter? Before with only 1000 miles on the 0w-40, my lines were very wet with oil.

I was wondering the same thing but yesterday I decided to check the drain tube I put on the ProVent. It was full to the top.
The turns out to be about 1/2 oz. of oil. Also there was a bit of water in the tube.

I'm running 5w40 rotella synthetic. The last time I checked the tube was about 2000 miles ago.

If you do some digging in the other Provent threads, one of the theories for this is that in stock form, the hose comes from the CCV and down to the intake. W/ the Provent the hose rises a little to clear the other stuff before it drops down into the provent. It's possible that this slight rise is causing most of the oil to drain back into the CCV and only the worst blow-by to enter the provent.

I'm getting acccumulation but it's about what I would expect. I have 1" of oil in my drain tube and it's been almost 5k miles. I am running B50 except when I travel and we already have ULSD here in California. So i should be right on schedule to drain my provent tube along with my regular oil change. I'm definitely glad I installed one. It's not a lot of oil but it's way more than I would want in my turbo/intercooler/intake.

Well, some of you have already discovered the problem with Mobil 1 0W-40. It stinks. It comes apart under load/heat and starts filling up your Provents and for those of us who do not use a Provent, makes a sticky mess throughout the intake system. There is a test called ASTM D-5800, also known a Noack Volatility. Mobil 1 0W-40 absolutely stinks at this test with vaporization losses exceeding 13 or 14%.

Amsoil makes a 5W-40 but it is now a CF rated oil. Amsoil reformulated it so it could be used in VW TDI engines. I intend to use either Amsoil's or Red Line's 15W-40 . When you look at the specs of these oils and Mobil 1 5W-40, they are very close. I hate Mobil anyway. The two aforementioned oils have ASTM D-5800 ratings of 6.5% or less.

I know that there is a potential issue with warranty, but if you read in the manual, the oils are "recommended" and not required. There is also "Moss-Ferguson" too. My dealer told me that the only way they would test the oil to prove it contributed to component failure was if the engine was totally sludged up with goo.

I am staying away from Shell because it is not a true synthetic but a hydrotreated petroleum product (so I understand).
