I posted last week about getting a bunch of water in a tank of fuel. Once again, thanks for all the replies.

Since then, I have cleaned the tank out all the way, replaced the filter head with the new version, and replaced the filter. It is running better, but it still dies when I "get on IT" at all. I am also still having the engine light on with the code for "Severe fuel Leak" although I an not getting any fuel leaks anyplace that I see. I am assuming I am getting air bleeding into the fuel lines at some point, but cannot find where.

As I stated, It starts good, idles fine and runs good up to about 50-55 at which point I need to turn the overdrive off to get any power out of it and to keep the thing from dying.

Will a lift pump solve this problem? Any thing else you folks can think of that might be causing this?

Thanks!

CF

If it's air getting in the fuel rail then you need to solve the problem right away.

Check all fuel lines for leaks at the connections and retighten the hose clamps, if you haven't replaced the fuel filter then I would start there and make sure that all the fittings on the fuel head are tight. If this doesn't solve the problem then install a lift pump.

Some are lucky and have not had air in fuel leak (yet) but many of us have :?

The problem is a big air leak! Sources are filter head but you have a new one. Leaving the center gasket on from the old filter when installing a new filter.

And the number one problem in my estimation is the "O" ring in the plastic disconnect back by the fuel tank :frankie:

So if you put a intank lift pump on you'll be good to go. Install it anyplace else and you'll just be masking the problem. (more fuel put still air)

I know some will say "fix the leak" but fuel lines were made for a gasoline engine and were under pressure and don't fail. We have a vacuum system that is just looking for a weak spot for air to get in. You can cut off the plastic connectors and replace them with rubber fuel line as some have done.

This is a very old subject, I first installed a Faucett pump under the hood to verify my air in fuel suspection then installed a Dodge/Cummins lift pump in the tank and instantly was rewarded by a better running jeep :jester:

If I were in your situation, I would go ahead and install the pump, seems like you had it all apart and have gotten no where.

I have looked and connaot find it, but what is the part number for the cummins lift pump that fits in the liberty tank?

Also, anyone have any other suggestions as to what lift pumps a napa or O'Rielley parts store might have in stock?

Thanks again for all your assistance!

are you getting the P093 code!!

this doesn't sound good..sorry..My wifes jeep had similar problems..
would run at idle..try and accelerate..it would die!!!.
I already had a lift pump and after market filter..air wasn't the problem..:(:(:(:(:(:(

eventually it wouldn't start at all...cranked fine, but no fire!!! I even put starting fluid in the air intake..it ran then..so its fuel related..

after changing the CP3..its been fine since. Thank Geordi..:):) I still have the old pump..

OT!!!!
if someone has a new or known good pump..after dissembling the pump it seems only 1 of the 3 radial pumps works? I can explain more. pictures would help I don't have any...maybe for another thread.

Yep. Sounds exactly like what I have going on. Hrmm.

After I filled up last night, the thing started driving almost normally again. I HATE to take it to Jeep, but I may have to. All the CP3 pumps I am finding, are in the $700-800 range. Anyone know of any cheap places to get one?

Thanks for the info.

Try the cheap stuff first! LIFT PUMP  Per MrMopar our CP3 has a coating inside to protect it against running dry. But I'll bet it won't last forever. The quicker you eliminate the air the better your chances of not needing a CP3 pump :dizzy:

Still having the issues. Should have the in tank module today according to Fed Ex.

I am getting a TON of air in the filter housing. I can bleed it, then 10 minutes later, its full of air again. Hope the lift pump helps. Have had it to a garage on a lift, and could not find any fuel leaks.

I have been through the same mess as you. You wont find any wet spots on the lines. I have an inline lift pump, it helps but not totally. I am getting ready to install the in tank one. Have gotten rid of the oem connectors on the supply side and it is better. Still having cold start / air in the filter issues and cel at heavy throttle problems though.

Update:

Well, got my in tank lift pump in today. Will have it installed tomorrow. When dropping it off at the repair shop, I noticed the one remaining fuel filter I have sitting on my passenger seat. When I got the new fuel filter housing, it had a filter installed. Really really tight, I was unable to get it off, so I installed the entire thing. This had been bugging me, since that was the only part of the system that had changed that I had not had my hands on and eyes in. I called a friend, and between the two of us we managed to get the "old" new filter off and I changed it out with the one I had left. The jeep ran awesome for the test run. I drove it up to O'Rielly and used the engine scanner to reset the check engine light. It stayed off. No more error. I decided to drive the Jeep home, and try a drive into Anchorage with it in the morning. After about 30 miles driving it back to the house it started acting up again. No CEL, and no code, but same symtoms. It did not however die. Just ran really sluggishly.

I will probably drop it back off in the morning for the mech to install the lift pump :(. I am beginning to wonder if there is still some crap in the tank from the bad fuel and its slowly clogging the new filters. It's just taking longer now. I dunno. nearly at the end of my rope here.

Could very be. If you still have the filter you removed open it up and look at the paper element.

OK new lift pump not helping much. It does run better, but not like it should. I guess next step is injection pump.

Anyone know a good source for the injection pumps? How big a deal it it to change those out?

The place where I was having it worked on decided they were unable to install the injection pump. They said they would need $5k worth of special tools?

Anyway, broke down and took it to Jeep in Anchorage. After 3 hours of "Diagnostics" they called and told me my lift pump that I just installed was probably bad and they would need to install a new one. I explained to the guy CRDs do not come with lift pumps and asked him if they had looked the part number up in the computer yet, since I would be interested to find out what the part number was

He got a little flustered and said he would call me back in a bit. This is not looking good for them knowing what they are doing.
