Post subject:  How to get the temp up

On a trip last week was my first real driving of the jeep in cool weather post GDE tune, my temps got down to one or two ticks past 1/4 on the temp gauge. Wouldn't increasing the engine temp improve fuel mileage? What have you guys done to increase the engine temp, besides the modified thermostat?

Sounds like your t-stat has failed to me. Many of us have had the same issue. Now, I run almost half scale in any weather.

Mine seems to be outside temp related.

Do any of you block off the grill?

Yeah, if it's your t-stat it WILL be outside temperature related. These t-stats commonly fail in the open position. So if it's HOT weather... the Jeep will naturally be able to achieve normal operating temperature and you'll never notice it. But if the weather gets cold...that's when the Jeep will have a hard time getting up to full operating temp.

As soon as I changed my t-stat, my Jeep instantly started running half-scale on the temp. guage....whether it's -10°F outside or 95°F outside.

X2 on changing out the Thermostat.
Radiator blocking is for the very cold winter.

I have the same thing happening since installing the GDE tune.

i have same problem in mine, it usually sits a lil above 1/4 temperature though.

You guys! It's too bad the search function is worthless.

Replace the t-stat like everyone has said. I found that my fan clutch was bad also. PO didn't have a clue. FSM says that running the 3.7 gasser cold causes sludge build-up. Probably not much good for a diesel either. . . 'sides the heater won't get hot and you'll freeze :)

Click,
Here is what Keith at GDE suggested:

Kevin,

The engine now uses less fuel, so it will tend to run cooler, especially if doing light footed driving. If you want to improve the fuel efficiency even more, block off a few of the grill openings during the winter and you can also remove the accordion snorkel coming out the bottom front of the air box. This will allow warmer engine compartment air to be ingested and tends to help fuel efficiency in cool weather. These together will keep the coolant temps warmer. A 192F thermostat is also very beneficial; a LOST member has designed a serviceable t-stat for the CRD at a very reasonable price considering the work involved.

Thanks,

Keith

My CRD recently started running cooler too. The only time it would get to one click below half was was when ambient temperatures were above 90 and I was on an interstate. As soon as I exited the freeway it would drop to two ticks below center that VAG-COM said was 156 degrees on a above 90 degree day

Of course the GDE tune will aggrevate the problem because the engine is running more effeciently. That means less waste heat being produced.

Two weeks ago I installed a new OEM thermostat and it now runs just a tiny bit below halfway. VAG-COM says 174 degrees and my laser light non contact thermometor shows the same where the coolant exits the head going into the thermostat.

I didn't get the modified thermostat because I have an extended warranty and I didn't want 'non original" parts :ALONE:

Mine just start acting a bit weirdo! One day he run a bit over 150F and the next day he run in normal condition temp, I never seen a shot Thermostat acting like this, intermittent malfunction??? I ‘m Lucky because Mark (kapalczynski) sold me the OEM Sqeeto got in stock for a fair price. I will send the shot one to Mark ASAP

Because of this all my Flex Fan test are compromise, but in fact I learn a few things in the process ….A 2.25 inch pitch blade produce too much noise and a 1.5 inch pitch performance 6 blades fan can be a good bet.

High RPM is not helping a Diesel to get hot faster in winter, use “great power demand” trick and block a bit the front grill like big truck do in extreme cold condition.

If mine acts up I will considering the Kaplizinzki tstat, or order an OEM one if the wait is too long, then send Kap the core for the cause of my fellow CRD brethren 8)

Moparpartsamerica has then in stock and unless they type the order number for the zip code like they did on mine you should get it in a week or less. :D

Mine was running 157f on a 90 plus degree day  Now it runs halfway between stright up and the first tick to the left :jester:

The thermostat was stuck open, with the new one it is back to one tick below the 1/2 mark.
