Can I take the GDE-tuned ECU out of my CRD and pop it into another CRD? Or is the ECU VIN-specific and therefore tied to the vehicle?

I know it is specific to that long 20 digit code on the front of the engine, and pretty sure it is coded to the Vin? I recall maybe Geordi? immobilized his vehicle with a different ECU, or some one else?

The KJ has an immobilizer in the vehicle, so the engine won't start if you take an ECU from one vehicle and put into another without changing the VIN.
