Is there something special about the coolant we need to run in these engines?

I changed my egr coolant hoses the other day, and filled it with prestone premixed long life coolant.

while reading a flyer in the local paper i noticed an ad for diesel coolant... just wondering what the difference is.

The correct antifreeze is HOAT type coolant Like Zerex G-05

http://www.valvoline.com/products/brands/zerex/antifreeze/42

that prestone MIGHT be ok in small amounts like when topping up but I would not change the coolant with anything but the correct stuff.

so of course after posting I decided to do a search and found plenty of info. Seems the major difference for diesel engine coolant is the cavitation issues that result from diesels. Anyway, I'll get some of the proper stuff, then drain and refill..

100% of Prestones coolants are OAT coolants,AKA Dexacool.Just google Dexacool and all the lawsuits and ugly pics and is not mixable with HOAT coolants.

Glad you decided to drain/refill with the correct coolant, which is HOAT coolant by the way(Zerex GO5).

Yeah went to walmart and picked up two jugs of the stuff... I'll get around to draining it hopefully tomorrow, but possibly next weekend.

HOAT is the required coolant for all chrysler vehicles made after 2001 not just Diesels. Also Ford trucks since 2002 and ford cars since 2003, all MB, Volvo BMW and Mini.

Here is a chart that shows what goes in what
http://www.valvoline.com/pdf/Zerex_CoolantChart.pdf

I should go get some G-05 myself so I have it if I ever have to add any.
