 Post subject: hitch wiring guestion

on the round hitch connector w the 6 outside slots and the one center one hooked on the bumper of the crd , so the female conector piece that holds the wires , I need to know what is where so I can get them in the right place on the male adaptor from the trailer. thanks for any help.

It sound like you have the 7 blade RV connector. Most are uniform as to what blade goes to what function. I do know though that my has a couple specialty spots that are wired specifically for my camper, i.e. center pin is used for the back up lights. The below diaghram is the same as I have mine wired.
You can also take two leads from a battery, hook negative torailer frame, then with help, touch the positive lead to each contact on trailer harness and find out what light lights up and mark what go to where. Can use a meter also on vehicle what blade is charged when you turn on each function.

If you have the factory 7-pin plug it has the wiring configuration on the cover of the plug.

So my 7 pin harness has some different colors on it. Tried figuring out which wire did what but only power I was getting was the straight 14v from one of the two red wires which I'
m assuming charges a battery on the trailer. There are the following wires

(2) red
(2) black
(1) white/orange stripe
(1) white/grey stripe
(1) green
(1) yellow


Any ideas what wire does what? I tried turning on the turn signals and connecting a volt meter up and got no voltage on any of the wires. The 20A fuse is good so I'm stumped.

There's another fuse by the driver's door also for towing.
Don't look at the wire colors on the back side of the round 7 pin on the jeep. They don't follow that color scheme :SOMBRERO:
Do your trouble shooting from the 7 pins as they are listed above.

Now IF you have a FACTORY INSTALLED towing package, NOT dealer installed MOPAR one, besides the TWO fuses there's a bundle of relays in the right rear quarter panel to isolate trailer wiring from jeep wiring.
There is/was a good thread on trailer wiring on KJ Country I used but they seem to be down.

The wires going to the 7 pin plug on the jeep if they are factory/dealer Mopar unplug from the back side of the round 7 pin.

If your talking about the 20 amp fuse (which has blown before) yes I changed it and it is good. I cut the harness from the back of the 7 pin connector and bought a new one from walmart that allows you to screw them back. The only problem is I can't figure out which one is which. I got 14v from one of the red wires and a very strange voltage reading on another wire but nothing from the others. I think I need to ground one of the wires to get correct readins but have no idea which one is ground.

Power is the only wire you'll get a reading from at "idle".
All the other wires will only have voltage when "active";
I.E. When you press the brake pedal, the wire(s) for that function will have voltage.

Use your meter as you would normally. Ground the meter, then touch each wire
individually with the meter positive wire. Positive (14V) should be the only wire to give you a reading.
Then turn the lights on, the running light wire(s) will now read 14V.
Same for the brakes, turn signals, etc.

Did your original plug have MOPAR and Chrysler on the lid with the pinouts of the various pins engraved on it?

If not then your harness/plug was aftermarket. If it's Chrysler then the wiring harness unplugs from the rear side of the 7 pin round plug. The cable then comes up through the floor and into the right rear quarter panel. That's also where the 7 connector is grounded.

If your plug was aftermarket then who know how it's installed.
But if it's MOPAR look in the factory service manual (FSM) for the trailer harness.
You want pages 8W-54-1 through 8-W54-6 and there are a total of 4 fuses counting the one for the brakes:JEEPIN:

I looked for some online but didnot find those..those answer the big question..pin number relative to the tab on the connector.

I installed a Mopar harness on mine and am not sure where all the fuses are :|

The Mopar harness as shipped does not follow the factory wiring. The one big mistake they made was to connect the control wire that should be switched and normally goes through the fuse panel on the left is instead hooked to the front cigerette lighter that's always on. Wiring it that way would have allowed my trailer to run down the Jeep's battery. I hooked it to the "tow" fuse on the left fuse panel.
I found it all very confusing.

Thanks Joe. I will try calling a jeep dealership and see what adivce, if any, they can give.

BTW, I was hoping this went along with the thread enough to help out but if necessary I will start another separate thread. I just like things related in one area and not spread around. Helps when searching.

FWIW, I carry 2- 7to4 adapters with me. Our little trailer does not like the factory supplied one. It likes the $6 adapter from Auto Zone.
