Whats your ratio? Just in case you need the ring and pinion. Lots lighter than a rear axle and it can be found in the US.

Outer wheel bearings can cause noise, have your tech check that out too, you may get lucky.
Consider moving your post to Liberty CRD Love That Torque, more read that section.

Cheers

my kj is a 2.5 crd sports and only one year axle setup will fit
was told 8.25
part numbers where for axle is 05072476AA and 052072476AB
new axle off dealer or should i say stealer was €1500 plus 21 % vat
was outer first bearing seal kit was €465 plus 21% vat and second bearing kit was same

i found a used axle for my jeep in uk for 450 sterling pounds £ but tnt wanted 250 sterling pounds too deliver it by road too me in ireland  ,so i had few beers and what the hell
getting jeep parts for cherokee in ireland is a big joke with costs
i was given a quote for front brake pads other day and they looked for 146 euros  ,i got in parts shop for 37 euros
had too change my front disks too ,stealer wanted 148 euros each plus vat at 21%,i was luck as parts shop match a set at 44 euros each with vat on,
funny thing, ford, american company ,long time in ireland and europe and parts are cost affective and not so expensive but jeep ,dodge ,mad prices, even too buy a jeep or dodge in ireland is mad money, that why the never sold,i bought mine second had when it was 2 years old,had 65 k miles on clock and now has 175k miles on clock, good jeep, did great work for me,alot of miles on the road, its apity there not a americian supplyer in euro selling close too american prices as they would clean up
so next 4x4 will be toyota or nissan o,wont im afraid be a jepp as not cost affective anymore specialy now as money tight with recession
its a big pity as i like my kj a nd was hoping too get the diesel version of wrangler limited 4 door next, unless i win the lotto :D
i have put in a good bit of time and money and work in my kj over the years, its a mid size jeep ,so better on fuel, but i just dont know
plus if i sell, ill miss this place, this site as a good bunch of helful guys and gals here ,if a question,99 per cent of the time, someone will try too help you
just getting p off with costs ,if a axle costs this much, imagine a gearbox or engine work would cost here
