| Post subject: | CRD Thermostat |
In my own diesel experience, I've found that diesels prefer to run hot compared to gassers. I've also found that some manufacturers find it a lot easier/cheaper to use gas thermostats. So putting a higher-temp thermostat in some diesel engines boosts performance and mileage. My engine seems to peak out at about 170F. (no, not 600F...that's another thread) I'd be more than willing to experiment a bit with a 180-190F thermostat, if I could find one. My local NAPA, however, can't find a part for the CRD. The service manual talks about having to replace the thermostat and housing as a unit. (!?) Anyone taken their thermostat housing off? Is there a perfectly normal-looking thermostat under there? |

Sorry, I haven't pulled my thermostat housing off yet. But I would be really interested in experimenting with a 180-190F thermostat too. |

Yup that is what my ScanGage shows for normal temp. I posted on here somewhere what the readings were for each mark on the gage, but I didn't bookmark the page. |

I've got the service manual on CD, I'll see if they show a specific picture for the diesel thermostat. |

Hey, Retmil46...sorry to bother you, but I wonder if you ever got 'round to looking this up? |

Mitch you got too much salt on the brain still from all those years in the USN. After 23 1/2 years took me about 3 years to get my brain cleared out. |

Wow. Well, okay...it's a little hard to believe that they'd make something that non-standard, but it looks like the housing and thermostat are integral. So unless they can be separated, the only way I can think to tinker with this would be to find some kind of in-line housing that would let me swap out readily available thermostats until I found one that seemed to work. But 170 degrees seems awfully low for a diesel. My Unimog came with a 177 degree thermostat, but runs much better with a 190 degree unit. |

Just a thought... With our liquid cooled EGR valves, I'm wondering if we'll have overheating problems if the thermostat is changed for a warmer one... |

I seriously doubt that a thermostat difference of 10-15 degrees F would make a dent in the cooling of exhaust gasses that are several hundred degrees. It may be a moot point, though, given the difficulty of changing the thermostat. |
