Glow plugs checked out to be good by the dealer, an independant shop and myself. I have also replaced the glow plug controller. My volt meter is showing 4 volts to the plugs. I thought I read on here that 7 volts were needed. If I am getting only 4 volts out of the controller while putting 12 in, what would the problem be..both controllers show the same voltage out.Battery is new and hot. Thanks. |

The voltage to the glow plugs is not a steady DC that is easy to read, instead it is an on/off pulse depending upon how cold it is. Any reading you get will be an average for the conditions you are testing under. When the engine is colder the voltage will read higher due to the longer on pulse, not so cold, the voltage will read lower due to a shorter on pulse. Warm engine, no on pulse. This may be an over simplification to some, but I hope it helps you understand why you are not getting a reading you expected. Modern automotive electrical systems are freaky to some, but with all of the tricks, they can shove more down a wire besides current. Gone are the days of straight glow plugs that run on 12 volts. |
