Hi All,

I was driving to work this morning. I heard a *pop* then a constant sort of whirring sound coming from my engine bay. I was like 1/2 mile from work, so I coasted the rest of the way in. I did notice, however, that I had NO power. The Jeep refused to get above 1800 rpms.

I'm pretty sure it's a bearing in my alternator, but I'd like to get another opinion:

it SEEMS that the sound is coming from the passenger side of the engine bay. (I don't actually know where the alternator is located)
I didn't lose power steering
I didn't see any leaks and my temp was still slightly below half.
The belt was still attached.

I was able to start the car back up, but the sound was still there. Maybe I should crack the alternator with my hammer.

Thoughts? Does my diagnosis sound right?

I agree check both hoses leading from your intercooler. And i bet you were blowing black smoke when you try to push it hard.

ohh, nice.

Yeah, I didn't check the tailpipe for black smoke.

I should be able to splice in a bit of exhaust piping with some heavy duty clamps to patch that up.

Just be careful i tried to sleve mine with radiator hose and it just split more. But good luck with it i hope it works. But i would order a set of Samcos asap that will solve your problem for good. Plus you get to choose a color and replace both hoses with higher then OEM standards.

I have a set of used hoses. When I bought my CRD a couple of months ago, and after getting slightly paranoid from reading these posts and not knowing the service history, I thought I would be proactive and bought a set of the new style OEM hoses. Well, low and behold the hoses I took off were the new style because the one had the red innerliner. The hoses are in good shape. Make me an offer.

That is about the cheapest i have seen them i got mine off of ebay from Greece and they cost me 250 plus 30 for shipping. And if you price it out against your dealers price for those hoses you are looking at close to 300 for the pair. So go with the Samcos and dont look back more then worth the money you pay.

I'm thinking I need to get these replaced like tomorrow. Is there anywhere in Denver, Colorado that sells these? The CRD is my only vehicle. I could go to my dealer for the OEM, but they're not good about carrying the diesel parts.

So after some careful inspection of the hoses and listening to the car more, I'm 99% sure it's the turbo.

At idle, there is a slight grinding sound. It's when I try to rev up that you can hear the whinning. I can record the sound and post if people are interested.

I noticed oil in both of the ic lines. Now in a gas powered turbo car, this usually means that the turbo is going bad. Is this the same for diesel?

I've got a car I can borrow until I can figure this out, and I'll start a new thread with those particular questions.

oil inside the cac hoses is most likely from the CCV. now if you have oil in the exhaust or on the exterior of the turbo, then you need to worry.

Yes, post the sound clip if you can.
One mans "grinding sound" maybe another mans "perfectly normal."

The true test of a bad turbo is to take the intake tube off, stick your fingers into the turbo
and try to wiggle the impeller shaft.

All CRDs have oil in the CAC hoses unless they have had the EHM mod performed. Even the ones with a provent can have a small amount of oil.
