Is my turbo toast

Hi newbie here. I was coming home today and all of the sudden noticed a buzzing / whistle coming from my passenger side of the engine bay on my stone stock 06 CRD Limited. The noise seems to come on around 1800 to 2000 rpm and more black smoke than I'm used to seeing comes out. After I got home I reved the engine in neutral and park and no buzzing whistle. I checked that the clamps were tight on the turbo hoses and have to say that the clamp on the turbo hose labled turbo out was loose and there is a lot of sooty oil on the turbo hose near the air box. I put the Liberty back on the road and the whistle / buzz was back just a bit more pronounced. Now I am worried as when I rev the engine in park I can't hear the turbo whistle at all. Is my turbo toast. I've driven this thing conservatively. It only has 21000 miles on it. Any thoughts?

check the turbo hose near the battery. it usually blows on the bottom and you have to take it off to see where it ripped. happened to me...even though you don't have many miles, could have weakened then blew....

Remove the turbo hoses and do a close up visual inspection.

If the turbo boost hoses (CAC hose) are original, then the problem could most likely be a deteriorated hose.

Yeah it could be a hose leaking (just opening up under pressure). I'll assume you don't have a Provent so it could be a degraded hose. You need to have load on the vehicle before boost really comes on to open these small splits up. You could probe the hose in various places when the engine is running and maybe you'll find the split, then clean it up good and tape it (wrapped around the hose) with something like silicon rescue tape. That should hold you until you can get some Samco silicon hoses to replace the stock ones. If not the hoses, before you suspect the turbo - check the EGR pipe joint where it attaches to the exhaust manifold. The 06 and 07s have a habit of cracking the flange weld (crappy welds on a bunch of these). It gives exactly the symptoms your experiencing. It bleeds off exhaust from the manifold into the air and thus robs the turbo of 'Push' or pressure, which can feel like a boost leak.

Chrysler Jeep has fixed these under warranty in Australia. The new replacement pipe has a much better weld on the flange, and probably will not break again.

Thanks for the insight. I'll begin checking this evening and report back when finished. I've had no luck finding Samco hoses in stock, so I will try the dealer in Houston TX for an OEM replacement set if needed. I'm glad you guys are out there keeping CRD's safe for mankind.

I wanted black but it was out of stock, so I settled for blue.
You can tape up the rip with Gorilla Tape as long as you clean off the oil first with brake cleaner and wipe it dry.

Guys,

Thanks so much for the advice. I replaced the intercooler hoses and presto no more rushing air and now I can hear the turbo whine like it should. I've attached a photo to show the split. It was there just like you said it would be.

Not to diss Samco (who seem to have a good product now) but there is no need to purchase aftermarket hoses with their associated higher price unless you really want some blue CAC hoses. The updated OE hoses have been greatly improved upon from the originals. I've had the updated ones for 100k miles now and they show no oil sweating or sign of breakdown.
