Hey, I'm looking at an '06 liberty with a little over 180k miles on it. Is there a reason that they stopped making the diesel version and is there anything that might fail in the near future? I'm pretty sure that the engine could go on forever because...well...let's face it. It's a jeep and it's a diesel, but is there anything I need to be weary of before making this purchase? Here's a link if anyone wants to take a closer look: http://www.xtrememotorsales.com/webtemp ... id=2929668

I live 15 minutes from there, have seen this jeep there for sale for a month or longer (was $8999 last i saw). It was on ebay but received no bids. I notice the plastic engine cover is broke and the fuel filter head is changed out. I am not sure on how well it was changed because I see a green plug that is not hooked up next to it.
I have to swing into the jeep dealer across the street from there tomorrow to pick up some mopar skids i ordered, if you wanted me to meet you there and look it over let me know. FYI, I bought mine over a year ago with 24k for $14k

I'd offer $6,200 with a 6 months warranty. it will need a new timing belt and W/pump soon.

It would be nice if they'd take the engine cover off so you can see the actual engine...

Looks like they have one of Darby's reflective decals. At some point, it must've belonged to a LOST member. Might explain the Racor fuel head, too.

Krispy1202: Chrysler never stopped making the CRD, they just stopped selling them in the US because of retarded emissions laws. The unplugged green plug is nothing to worry about seeing as how there is no heater on that Racor fuel head. The fact that it has an aftermarket fuel filter head is a good sign that it was well taken care of. I'd jump on it, but not for what they are asking.

Exactly what I was thinking. A LOST member owned that at some point. Look at the fuel head, the non-OEM fuel filter, the plumbing on the other side for a ProVent, the non-OEM battery, the decals, the snaps on the grille for a blanket, etc. Somebody here knows something about that Jeep.

Personally, I'd use caution with this one. I've only heard of a handful of these things that have made it to 200K miles so far, and more than that who didn't.

My Racor has a heater on it....good luck with it like that in Jan and Feb in this area. Without the heater on the filter you will gel up quick on cold days. Since we do not have a fuel return line dumping warm diesel back into the tank the heater on the filter is needed in this area.
I may stop in there today and give it a look over in person....

i saw this up on craigslist for a while, im in the NW chicago suburbs and its listed at 8k right now. i havent seen a crd that cheap listed anywhere but then again i havent seen 1 with that many miles either.
i noticed the cracked engine cover and fuel filter too. i would just do standard questions but ask about the common issues that these jeeps have which you can read about all over this forum.

Here's a link to an earlier thread that contains a link to view the Liberty CRDs that are for sale on Cars . com. Gives you a basis of comparison for the one you are looking at. 111 listed.

At that mileage you have to start questioning the transmission and all other moving parts. They are most likely at the end of their lifespan and could end up needing costly repairs. Does anyone know the average life for our tranny's?

So if I were to buy this would I have to get a heater? And if so how much would this run me and would it be pretty easy to install? Lastly could anyone give me a good place where I could get a heater and what kind would be best?

The green plug is the WIF sensor. I'm sure it has the heater (it mounts to the bottom of the filter).

Its the white filter head over on the right of this picture:

It's an upgrade over the stock fuel filter/heater.

Also, if you look at the left here by the coolant reservior you will see some additional plumbing, that is most likely a provent pumbed in over there, also an upgrade.

Also you can see the grill snaps here, the black dots, to attach a grill blanket for the winter.

This stealth sticker means that it pretty much had to have belonged to someone here at some point:

Also it has the husky floor liners front back and rear which are not cheap:

Basically someone loved this thing and spent some extra money on it at one point, you know that when that person had it loved it and cared for it, whats happened since then who know. It's got a good bit of miles and I would just go ahead and do a timing belt service on it to feel safe. With those kind of miles it was driven a pretty good bit, probably someones commuting car on the highway, which is usually less wear and tear than city miles.

I wonder if it has a lift pump installed....judging by the mods I would bet it does. I did not have time to stop today, but will try later this week. Maybe it has a pre f37 tcm on it :)

Alternatively to the "good news its been cared for story" is the fact that the person who cared for the car gave up on it. Like me, they probably miss it, but realized that for a variety of reasons its disadvantages of the CRD outweigh the reasons to keep it.

What are the reason you want or need a CRD? I bought my 06 Liberty CRD limited with 178K for $8200, but I drive it very little, it also needs tires. My VW TDIs are my daily drivers, my CRD is for towing our boat or when ever I need to haul something with a trailer. $8K is not a bad price, but I would start at least $1K below their asking price. $7000 should be a good starting point, and be firm (walk away if they don't act flexable). Give the dealer a list of all the issues that the CRD can have to show them that they may have a piece of junk on there lot. Get all the repair records and history you can. Have them supply you with the privious owners information (ad saids one owner) and call them and ask about all they have done to the CRD. This CRD looks like it MIGHT have been modified with the right stuff and that is GREAT and VERY hard to find. Ask about Euro torque converter or old factory TC, lift fuel pump near or in the tank, possible computer tunes, new intake air hoses, clutch fan, and all the other issues CRD can have. This CRD probably is 80-90% highway miles and diesels last forever when used just on the highway (most 18 wheelers go 500K to 1 million miles +). We should have no problem getting 300K if you do the right stuff to it.

If you don't plan to use this CRD as your main car you should be fine. Don't buy this car if this is going to be you only car, because it may brake down at some point, but don't they all. The CRD can be hard to find parts for in the USA and finding the right person to work on it is slim to none. High mileage CRD make great second cars to use as a truck with a nice trailer.

I have found that big truck diesel mechanics don't like to and most of the time won't work on our CRD nor TDI because they don't think there is enough room under the hood to work on them, and they don't like timing belts (big trucks don't use TB's) and they don't know the details about our diesels. So you may end up ordering parts from Europe (shipping can be expensive) & working on it yourself.

Hey everyone. That is my old Libby!!! It was lovingly taken care of. Has a provent, Rocor, GDE ecotune, suncoast TC, oh and a detroit trutrack limited slip rear diff. Replaced 3 glow plugs since Jan 1, 2010. I loved that jeep. The only problem is that it misteriously would belch coolant from the overflow side of the coolant reservoir and the dealership could never figure out why. They were ready to start throwing parts at it. I wasn't willing to dump the money into it at that point. Motor is still strong with and so is the tranny.

Oil changes were done every 10K miles. I am in sales so the vast majority of the miles on the libby are highway miles. If you can figure out the overflow issue (wasn't over heating according to temp guage) it still has a lot of life left in it.

I traded it in for $6500 to the dealership that was working on it. Traded it for a 08 dodge ram 1500 w/ the hemi. Dealership told me they got $6500 for it at the auction.

If you want any additional info let me know.

Almost forgot. The reason the engine cover is cracked is because I ran it over with the jeep while I was in North Dakota. Forgot it was off and in front of the jeep.

Anyway like I said the motor is still strong and so is the tranny.
