I have been shocked In my Jetta, Explorers, and my KJ, all of which had cloth seats. I just use my shoe to close the door now. Usually you can get around getting shocked by your car, leaving my office on the other hand, I always have to grab the door nob. Now that sucks!

If you think the static energy shock from a CRD is bad, try getting zapped while hooking up a slingload or climbing aboard an ungrounded Chinook Helicopter with 2,000 lbs of static electricity generators (rotor blades) spinning only at 225 rpm. I've seen people thrown backward 10-20 feet from the shock. It probably kill someone with a bad heart.

Often when hovering to pick up a sling load, the folks doing the slingload would panic or rush and usually slap the clevis of the sling load onto an expensive antenna instead of the actual center cargo hook. My crewchiefs were always watchful of this and used a water squirt gun to prevent damage to an expensive antenna. Not only would the offending slingload crew get wet, but the water squirt carried a hefty jolt of static electricity if it was squirted in a continue stream. Kinda neat....

I know that many times I've rode in my friends Dodge Cummins one ton that I get shocked about everytime stepping out onto the nerf bars!! It's not a bad jolt but like someone already said..enough to wake you up!! I havent been shocked by my gas libby but I know that most diesel trucks I've rode in I've usually gotten shocked by. Can hooking up a CB radio and having a bad ground cause this too?

I live on the Westcoast now and the air is usually pretty damp, no shocks here- it has not stopped raining today. But I used to live in Ontario Canada for many years, in the wintertime I used to get massive shocks - they actually have made me jump. Apparently a lot depends on the conductivity of one's skin, well I happen to have extremely dry skin which makes matters worse or so I've been told. Very annoying indeed.
I overcame the problem by always having my key ring in the hand (touching the metal keys). Approaching the vehicle I would let a key touch the door handle and sure enough I could see (at night) and hear a spark zapping from the tip of the key. You might want to try this method - worked for me for 15 years.
