I have had the "Clunk" problem for a while, and I have read that this may be the engine mounts. My question is how do you check them, and how do you fix them??? I have the jeep going in to the shop tomorrow, and I made a note for the mechanic to check them, but I'd like to give him more information. Thanks guys!

The passenger side on mine was loose and needed 4 to 5 turns of the nut on the motor mount shaft. That fixed the clunking sound about 4 years ago never to return. Good luck.

Inspecting for cracks in the rubber or signs of fluid coming out will indicate failure, but many don't show signs when they fail. Only way to tell for sure is to remove and shake, if it rattles inside it's done. My passenger side failed with no visual signs. I had the clunk, and extra steering wheel vibration when stopped and driving. You can sometimes tell if there is more vibration when stopped when in drive or reverse. I got 2 new mounts for $85 from an online mopar dealer- it took about 3/4 day, difficulty level medium depending on experience. You don't need to buy a left and right, 2 lefts is cheaper, and you can just transfer the heat shield. I'm going to post a follow up on my replacement help topic soon to help with the replacment proceedur.

But you should check your u joints 1st.

Agreed, good write up. I think they may have referenced the gasser torque on the through bolts of 40 ft/lbs. The fsm says 82 ft/lbs

Mine were torqued as tight as I could get them with a 2' extension, u joint, and a 3/8 socket wrench :|
