Post subject:  Need Turbo timer help
I realize that most don't have a turbo timer, but my wife now drives the CRD more than I do and she is not the best at making sure it idles. So for those that have turbo timers or are very knowledgeable on the subject which timer should I get? I see SP diesel has one, and I have seen this APEXi http://www.apexi-usa.com/products/Default.asp?id=5351 but I am open to others and quite frankly I would like to keep the cost down. Thanks

From what I hear...there really doesn't need to be turbo cool down on our CRD, unless it's been under heavy load.

Ask GDE about this...

Would definitely appreciate it if anyone has insight to a particular one that they recommend and if there is a particular one that is easier to install than another.

I would also love to hear GDE's input.

Before you cook your turbo medium rare you should read section 11, page 17 of the FSM. They show 6 times for different conditions from less then a minute to 5 minutes. It depends on vehicle load and how it's been driven.

If you don't have a copy "Sam's noob guide" tells you where to download it from :lol:

The oil lines going to and from the turbo are among the last things I would want to mess with :frankie:

What's more important would be a turbo temperature guage :BANANA:

i've checked multiple sources on the turbo cool down, even talked to a turbo specialist shop. He believes the only reason to wait more than 20 seconds is for everything else to cool down.

here's a message I received from a VM calibration engineer on the KJ.

For the 100k maintenance, your list is pretty comprehensive – just make sure that you use a new tensioner as well. During development, we hardly ever saw a failure of the water pump – but of course, now with units many years old in the field there are now failures happening somewhat more frequently, so changing that component is really up to you. Personally, I would change it only to avoid having to re-time the engine later on if it were to failure.

The KJ engines are very durable ones, and if the engine has been well cared for in its life then there is no reason why it shouldn’t last well past 100k miles. Letting the turbo cool down after driving is a sure fire way to make it last longer, but it’s really most important after heavy usage.

I am a not electrician and not mechanic. I am an ordinary user. If I am necessary something to do I ride to the specialist. All our motor mechanics advise to set turbo timer on any engine with turbocharger. Why ? Because of all service manuals for turbo vehicles (KJ Liberty/Cherokee2 include) gave the same instructions for stopping engine:
- for example Audi A4 1,8 turbo: http://www.a4mods.com/pics/turbotimer/warning.jpg ;
- for Jeep KJ 2,8 crd Service manual /Exhaust system/Turbocharger (page 11-13):

That is what we can read in "TURBOCHARGER "COOL DOWN" CHART" (Jeep KJ Service manual /Exhaust system/Turbocharger page 11-14):

But. if you don`t wont to wait from 1 to 5 minutes before keying off - you can to install a turbo timer to do the job for you :D

My 1st turbo-timer on my jeep looks like a little black box like OMEGA TURBO TIMER ( http://www.turbotimerstore.com/timers/O ... -p-72.html ). Installation time was smtg abt 30-40 mins. Price 20$ + installation fee. It stopped engine in 2 mins after keying off.
Few years ago i installed new 2-way signalization with turbo-timer function. Turbo-timer works in auto mode like a.m. APEXI AUTO TURBO TIMER - automatically determine the necessary amount of after idling time.

That looks really similar to the one I have. 4 wire hookup and 1, 3, or 5 minute selector switch.
