OK I posted earlier viewtopic.php?f=5&t=56554

To recap.

WIF light on, driving to get new filter Jeep Dies. Change filter, 4 times. Still not running right. Stalls at speeds above 55, acts as if its in limp mode sometimes. Changed fuel filter housing to new model, installed in Tank lift pump. Decided on needing (probably) a injector pump called the shop that was doing the work, and they decided they could not change the pump due to not having special tools. Broke down and took to Anchorage Jeep dealer. Dealer does 4-5 hours on it and calls me and tells me the lift pump is bad. I tell them there is NO lift pump stock on CRDs. He asks to call me back later. He does and says, yes I am right. I explain, I know I am right, and I had explained to him twice what all I had done including installing an in tank aftermarket lift pump.

Now, as of today, dealer says they cannot warranty any work they do on the injector pump, and if I want to buy one and they install it, its on me. Is tehre a way to tell if its the injectors of the injector pump for sure?

This is driving me nuts. about ready to sell this thing. I mean I love it to death, but if nobody can work on them....

Do I understand correctly this all started when the WIF light came on? If so it sounds like you bought a tank of water :grim: When you put the intank lift pump on did you totally drain the tank when you had it down?

If you have your reciept for that overpriced water maybe you should contact the station owner.

Yes, started with WIF light, No I do not have the reciept. It is probably on my credit card statement thought. I talked to the station manager and she said they have had no complaints or other indications of water in the fuel.

You have to drain the tank.... you have to eliminate this variable first.

Stop driving your vehicle if you still have water in fuel...... you will do major damage to the high pressure fuel pump and or injectors.

1. Remove the fuel line leading into the fuel filter from the fuel tank and use it to drain out the bad fuel in the tank. Use 5 gallon buckets to hold the bad fuel, use piece of an old garden hose as a funnel to drain the fuel into the buckets.

2. Turn the ignition key to on but do not crank the motor so that the lift pump can do its work in removing the fuel from the tank.

3. Allow all of the fuel to drain out of the tank, it will take some time.

4. Add 3/4 can of this stuff http://www.powerservice.com/d911/ to the fuel tank.

5. Unscrew the fuel filter and drain the bad fuel out of it then add 1/4 can of this stuff http://www.powerservice.com/d911/ and good fuel to the fuel filter then screw it back on.

6. Add good fuel to the tank.

7. Start your vehicle.

8. The water issue should be gone, if not then you have other issues.

9. If your dealer is of little help, then locate a reputable local diesel mechanic for assistance and advice.

could it be the CP3, the injector pump..yes..but that MUST THE LAST ITEM CHECKED..

the dealer will not warranty the new cp3 or the old one? if the new one..FIND another dealer..RUN!!!

special tools..they cost about $100 for the special tools??? its possible to change it without the 'special tools'..I've done it..easy no..the tools would have helped..and these are needed if the timing belt is removed. removing the timing belt isn't required to change the CP3..

another way to try testing..
run the input to the filter housing into a 5 gallon can of diesel. NEW clean water free..use a new filter..prime by hand..this duplicates the original setup..no lift pump..the CP3 will draw the fuel!! to about 20 inches of vacuum. if this doesn't work..as in to doesn't run normal while driving and accelerating.. there a small control valve on the CP3 that is used to control the fuel pressure..if this fails the pump look bad. I'm not sure if this valve is replaceable separately.

good luck

Tank was drained a couple weeks ago. When I installed the lift pump. Also replaced the filter (several times) and housing.

The problem with the Jeep dealer not wanting to work on it is the fact they do not know about them. Also they have no special tools. Its not in warranty, It has 105k miles on it.

Going to try the gear pump before I change out the injector pump on advice from Kieth from GDE. Super nice guy, and very helpful. Once I get caught up from this mess, I'll be buying one of his ECMs from him!

Tell us more about the "gear pump". Are we talking about the primary pump on the rear of the CP3 and is it available seperatly?? What other parts of the CP3 might available seperatly :?:

Yes the vacuum pump on the rear of the CP3. Service Manual calls it a "Gear pump", I have also seen it called a "metering pump"

The component we suggested changing is the fuel inlet metering valve, the black part on the back side of the injection pump that the electrical harness connects to. The 'gear pump' is also referred to as a ZP18 positive displacement pump, this part pulls the fuel from the tank. When the metering unit is exposed to excessive amounts of air or other contaminants it can cause metal to metal contact and scoring of the internal scroll valve. This can lead to valve sticking and a P0093 error code. There are other parts thta can lead to the same failure mode, but this is the first and weakest component in the system.

ditto on the metering valve that GDE mentioned..that's the one I was talking about..

I don't think you can get the 'gear pump' by itself...

Is that metering valve also known as the Fuel Control Actuator (FCA)? If so look around to find a cheap one. Cummins parts at the Dodge dealer are generally 2x's the price of getting it straight from Cummins. Same part, just a Mopar sticker over the Cummins label. Since the CP3 is so common I bet you can beat dealer prices for parts by a lot.

Generally, if you get any significant amount of water in the high pressure system (that is CP3 to injectors) it can ruin it all. If you did get a bad load of fuel then you may have permanent damage to the system. Hope not, that's $$$$$$.

Well, I ordered the metering pump last wed. it finally shipped from Seattle on Thursday, and arrived in Anchorage on Sat. Since then I've been waiting for it. Roads are all ice yesterday and today and UPS was not delivering. So much for the $55 for overnight delivery :x

I'll install it and update everyone when it's in.

Well, after action report is, that there is no report. I was unable to chance the metering pump. After 2 days of fighting the darn thing we were unable to get 2 of the 3 bolts removed. That is in one hell of a tight place. I am thinking its gonna require taking the injection pump out to swap it. We removed so many things and disconnected so much... Still not enough room in there. We even tried several different types of 25 torx bits / tools. Nothing fit in the area we needed it to.

*sigh*
