Plug her in and engine block heater only works about 20% of the time.

What are the likely culprits? What should I check 1st?

Thanks in advance,
WWV

At least one fellow mentioned a bad connection by the plug.

The wire is probably frayed inside the insulation, right at the plug. Use an ohm meter and flex it while you measure the resistance and it should be about 35 ohms.

That was my guess as well. I'm just going to cut and replace. Don't have meter handy....

Thanks,

ok, next question....

Both "hot wires" look identical. Ground is obvious as it is green.

Any ideas on hot wires on which terminal to hook to? Does it matter?

Thanks,
WWV

PS - can you tell I hate electrical......?

Doesn't matter. It's just a resistive element.

I had the same problem last winter the plug wire was bad right at the plug, replaced the plug plus installed a Proheat oil pan heater Model 154 I think and wired them together now when I start on a cold morning around 15 to 20 degrees F my oil is 60+ degrees F much better on the engine having very warm oil plus with the block warm also I have instant heat out of the vents.
