The CRD visits the beach, drives over shells, does not get stuck yet we pass many stuck 2WD vehicles.

You'd find the drive down to the other side from Corpus Christi a little more challenging!

That's on my list of things to do. Seems like it would be cool to roll up to the cut and freak out the people on the either side.

It's actually a type of lifeboat. They used to have them on the offshore oil rigs. I guess some still use them. Most of the ones they use are completely sealed because when they evacuate it is either because of a VERY severe storm or a fire.
