Post subject:  Filter Head Wiring Kit 68043086AB Splicing Instructions?

I wanted to install my new Filter Head and Wiring Harness Adapter this weekend and when I went to check under the hood I couldn't figure out what wires I am suppose to splice to the adapter (No instructions included). The old filter head has a two plugs one with a red and black wire (driver side) and the other with a blue and yellow wire (passenger side).

From the best I can gather the blue and yellow plug will fit into the new filter head without modification on the plug closest to the passenger side. The part that is throwing me off is the kit includes 4 wires 2 green thicker and 2 purple smaller wires, but am guessing that 2 are spares. Does anyone have instructions on what the appropriate wiring splices need to be made? I tried searching on the forum under: "Filter Head", 68043086AB how to, wiring colors, etc, but couldn't find any matches. Any assistance would be appreciated.

I can tell you how I and my son (stoutdog) did ours and add that nothing melted or blew up but the best thing to do is just go to http://www.greendieselengineering.com/f ... st/76.page and check out the picture. The plug on the driver side operates the heating element and is the one you need to replace. The plug on the passenger side gets reused in the new filter head unit. I know the colors don't match so we just hooked things up based on wire size (thick to thick and thin to thin) and yes the extra wire is just that, extra. Per the picture we used marine grade butt connectors with built in heat shrink tubing rather than going the solder and heat shrink tubing route.

Thanks for the quick response I am on my way to install the new filter head. Strange thing is on my harness the red and black wires are the same diameter.

yeah, just follow the picture at gde forum...The sizes aren't the same though...the new green wires are thicker than anything on the old heater plug. The older red and black wires are the same gauge on mine also. Is it dangerous to splice a larger gauge wire(new green) into the older smaller gauge wire?

If the factory wire is small and you put in a larger one - it'll be fine
If the factory wire is big and you put in a smaller one - it would be a problem.

on the kit - just make sure you get good connections
