You do not want to switch from CV (constant velocity) joints back to a standard u-joint. CV joints are much better for dampening, vibration control and can absorb the suspension articulation better than a u-joint. CV joints are not cheap and if Jeep could have gotten away without using them...they would have.

Do your home work on CV joints, most of them are good quality, but some are not.
I have changed many CV joints and CV boots over the years.
Since the front drive shaft does not make any extreme bends, the joints should out last the boots as long as the sand does not get into them.
Good thing to check every oil change   .

Heavy duty off road puncture resistant CV joints would be a great idea, any good sources?

What people on this forum fail to realize is that on the KJ, the front drive shaft does NOT articulate! It's in a fixed position and never changes angle. So that is why you should be able to put whatever joints you wish in the front shaft.

Having said that, I'm leaning toward trying the $90 replacement CV joint for my shaft next month. Hopefully that'll cure my vibration.

.

That is exactly why you can't use just any type of joint.

Some light reading on the subject, part 2 is the important read.
