CCV Oil leaking after Thermostat change

Hello I recently replaced my thermostat on my 06 CRD. It was never reaching operating temperature. Now I have Oil leaking from my CCV which I did not have before I replaced my thermostat. I understand this is a blow by release but does changing my thermostat have anything to do with it?

Side note after replacing the thermostat there was air in the cooling system and the jeep did reach 3/4 on the temp gauge. After bleeding the system all the air is gone and my jeep runs consistently at 1/2 on the temp gauge.

Should be unrelated although it's certainly possible that during the tstat change you "disturbed", directly or indirectly the CCV. Check both ends of the CCV to turbo inlet hose (lower end should be fine) to make sure they are seated properly and make sure the CCV is fully pushed down in it's fitting (I think but don't know for sure that it's just pressed into a rubber grommet).

On refilling the coolant system it's a good idea to crack the vent on the front right, viewed from the front, corner of the radiator; fill the system until coolant comes out that vent; "burp" the upper radiator hose a few times; top off; replace and close that vent; complete the fill to say 3/4" or so above the coolant tank midline. Then do 3-4 cold to hot drive cycles and after a final cool check coolant tank level; should be back down to coolant tank midline after the residual air has been purged to the coolant tank and coolant drawn back into the system as it cools.

Ive checked all hoses any they to be connected properly. The top of my valve cover is almost completely covered in oil in just about a week.

The CCV is made of plastic that has probably gotten old and brittle.
It probably has a crack in it.

I broke mine by mistake. About $30 to replace.

Anything special about replacing it? I've been considering the EHM however I live in Michigan and the temperature have been as low as -10 for the last week or so. I don't want to risk the EHM to freeze up on me.

Another thought i just had. I have always done my own oil changed since I have owned it. Maybe i am putting too much oil in and the reason i am just now getting oil is because after i replaced the thermostat it is just now reaching the correct operating temperature? I could be completely off but just a thought

Possible but not probable I don't think. The correct amount of oil for a full fill, ignoring the dipstick which may or may not be accurate, including a filter change is 6.4qts with a stock size filter and 7qts for an oversize filter. Excess oil goes thru the CCV>turbo>intercooler>intake>out the exhaust and should not, on it's own, contribute to oil on top of your valve cover unless there is a leak somewhere as mentioned. Excess oil certainly could contribute to more visible oil on the valve cover but if you have a leak there would always be some oil on the valve cover as the CCV weeps oil thru the system all the time, just less if you have not overfilled.

I assume the oil filler hole plug is on tight.

Just install a ProVent, many of us on here have and they are a very good addon that the factory should have put on from the beginning. Many posts on here about them, just do a search.... :wink:
