They said he outfitted the U-Haul with hoses that pumped directly into the barrels, but why he was allegedly stealing the fuel and what he may have been doing with it are still a mystery at this stage of the investigation
Wow. That stuff has absolutely no use whatsoever. Except for fueling your vehicle!?!?!

Yea, clearly the police out there have ZERO imagination about anything. Hmm... Getting a FUEL from a FUEL STATION, pumping into large barrels inside a truck.

Must be baking a cake with it, or some narcotic use that we smrt policeymen can't figure out. </sarcasm>

Idiots. Does everything HAVE to have a drug connection? Like UFO said - Maybe its destination use was to fuel vehicles? Sounds like a simple credit-card-fraud-to-steal-gasoline scam that has been done in Florida LOTS of times, except this time they chose an environmentally friendly fuel that would have a much more limited end-user market for the crooks. In Florida, they sell the stolen gas right from the collection trucks (or a modified trailer in one case I saw) for like $1/gallon. Anyone who buys this stuff HAS to know it isn't *quite* on the up-and-up, but they also are the type to not ask questions.

The trailer was kinda cool, the crooks designed it to park right over the station's filling covers, and they would suck the fuel directly from the ground, bypassing the pumps completely. That was eventually made into a CSI Miami plot for an episode. In this case, it seems like the person doing the stealing wasn't too bright, and left the back of the truck open. Oopsie, you aren't supposed to let the gas station monkey see your unusual storage system!

Ya I think thats exactly it, this guy knows he can buy steal biodiesel, and then resell it to people thinking its a just a small timer selling bio independently.

People are gonna question regular gas or diesel, but not bio.

Also, encoding new blank cards takes a little bit of knowledge and equipment, so this guy isn't completely stupid or without resources. Sounds like a clerk just thought it was weird someone was buying so much fuel, and called it in.

Makes me wonder how he actually got caught.

It had to be the suspicious clerk, but really now... How much is an "unusual" amount? When driving my CRD to New Hampshire a few years ago when diesel spiked to over $4.50 in some places in NY state, I had 2 55 gallon drums in the front of my trailer. The guys at the service station on the NJ turnpike looked at me a little funny when I asked them for the nozzle (NJ is a mostly full-service state) and stuck it in the drums... But didn't say anything to stop me. I explained that their $3.25 price was (at that time) a darn good value.

That was for just regular diesel tho. Had I been able to get bio for the same price, I would have been all over it, and still brought it with me to NH. I ran on those drums for most of the summer, so it made the effort worth it.
