P0234, bad trubo?

I go up to the mountains every weekend. Lately my Jeep grew the habit of throwing P0234 code driving uphill. This usually happens 10-15 mins into the climb and usually clears with 3 ignition cycle trick.

However last weekend the code kept on coming back so I believe there is something very wrong with the boost system.

I checked all the hoses for cracks. Cleaned MAF and MAP. So what is left is the turbo could be going weak.

Has anybody else had a similar problem?

What kind of turbo does 2006 KJs use and what will it cost?

my second guess it could be related to exhaust system, especially the cat. any comments on this guess?

Have you read Sir Sam's noob guide yet?

You have to remove the boost hoses to inspect them.
Have you ever cleaned your MAP sensor?

We have a Garrett Research VNT turbo but I don't remember the model but it's a big brother of what VW uses on their TDI's. It is controled by a vacuum module so if there's any bad hoses on the passenger side near the firewall that might cause your problem. There's also a little clear plastic filter in that area that's supposed to be replaced every so often too but I don't recall it ever causing a problem.
Do you hear any air rushing from a split hose?
How long has it been since you changed your air filter?

The cat has been identified in a couple of instances. Remember our VM engine it of Italian hertiage so it needs a Italian tune up every day :-)r If your not famliar with the term it's a good hard run on the interstate to clean the cat out. Here's a link to the tdi club where it's explained.

Hoses look, feel, sound fine. The only different noise comes under heavy throttle, there is extreme vibration from something near the passenger side fender.

Air filter was replaced in late July along with fuel filter and oil.(4500-5000 km ago)

Not sure how to check - but the vacuum system Joe mentioned - it adjusts the vane angle on the turbo - so it would only engage on certain power demand situations, if it's not cycled occasionally it can get sticky.

although hoses are still the most likely - almost everyone over 40-50K has had them split - some of the smaller splits don't show until they're under pressure - although they'll eventually burst.

I had an issue with my turbo vanes sticking and throwing the same code.

GDE suggeted I continually try to move them free using this (http://www.amazon.com/Hand-Vacuum-Pump- ... B0017YC876) vaccum pump connected to the vaccum port on the turbo and use the device to free the vanes and also to drive it hard for a while going up a hill to free the vanes loose from the gunk that had built up around them.

It did clear it up, but I had to work at it for many hours, weeks actually.

i cannot find anything wrong with other components of the boost system so seems i will have the turbo removed for an inspection and clean up.

labor is cheap over here, why not take advantage :SOMBRERO:

I remember from my years in the states that hour cost of maintanence was 3-4 times what I have to pay now. :dizzy:
