I have been having a minor concern with the turning over of the engine during this winter. Today in Edmonton was around -26 degrees celsius. I had the Jeep plugged in for 7-8 hours before I started it up. It took about 7 seconds of cranking for the engine to turn over. When it finally did the engine was running at its usual RPM within a couple of sesonds. I was thinking there might be a concern with a glow plug failing. Why a glow plug? Not sure. The block heater works as the engine required no long period of high idle beofre normalizing. The battery was checked a couple of weeks ago, and for being almost 5 years old still cranks up to 97% full CCA. The red top is a beauty. There recently has been a concern with a ball bearing in my alternator that is squeeking and will need to be replaced during the summer months. I was thinking that maybe the alternator is not charging the battery fully and thuis might be causing the battery not having enough CCA to turn it over. I tested the glow plug control module 5 minutes ago and all the resistance seems to be fine in each plug. Has anybody else experienced this extended period of cranking to turn the engine over after it has been plugged in for a good period of time? Last year I never had this concern and if plugged in the engine would turn over easily. Thanks for all who respond. Peace. |

Check for air in your fuel system it can add to the cranking time, installing a lift pump and you will eliminate the problem. Unplug the MAF and shut off the EGR, last time I checked the Acid Head Hippies in Canada are all on the Coast of BC, not in Alberta. To check your charging, hook up a volt meter, ~14.5V is good. |

Just installed a new fuel filter under a month ago. However will attempt to purge the lines and re-prime. What exact points do you measure across to measure out the voltage? Hippies are amonst us. Thank god. Haha. No boarders are able to keep us down! Thanks for the input. |

I just got rid of my 5 year old red top and glad I did. Engine cranks much faster now which help it to start quicker. I replace it with a new red top 34/78. |

Good call, I will try a new battery. Five years is long and I will probably need it soon enough. The battery terminals were cleaned half a year ago. Still in good shape. Quick side question, has anybody bought a new alternator within recent memory? Rebilt or new? Vegetarian is a good call. The benefits are not to bad either. ![]() Peace. |

I tried starting mine this week in -19F. It wasn't happy despite the <1 y/o Diehard platinum battery. Didn't have it plugged in though. Left it plugged in the following night, and while not quite as cold, started right up as if it were a summer day. |

Killed a 450 lb cow elk. For the record, we hunted in a mid 90's F350. That thing's a beast. |
