How large of a tire can be run on a stock liberty?

we ran 245-70-16's stock with very minor rubbing.

also at the limits of lift - CRD's have a shorter drivers side CV axle - so CV boots get torn very easily.

BF Goodrich Commercial T/A TRACTION in a 215/85/16 fit under a stock Liberty with no lift, and look GREAT. No rubbing except possibly on the plastic wheel well liner at max turn, but they fit the hole perfectly.

Another benefit is that they are stronger tires, yet CHEAPER than any "passenger car" tires I have found. $115 each last time I bought them.

My 215 85 R16 Cooper ATRs never rub, even after my wife loads the inside to the roof with junk on top of my tools and on the back seat too.
What I like about the 215 85 R16 tires is that they will hold well even on wet ice that is so slick you can't walk on it.

Those are both nice tires, but dang they are about 40 lbs a piece! My Nokians weight that much, and I noticed a decrease in MPG with them. Though, the tires fricken rock..

I want the size, just not the weight.. beggars and choosers and all that

Exactly and if you want to stay away from the weight, STAY AWAY from load range "E" tires. Most of the 215/85s and a lot of the 245/75s are going to be "E" rated and HEAVY. That's why most people stick with 245/70 or 255/70 or 265/70 because you can get those in the appropriate "P" rated weight.

The traction flavor of the BFG commercial are actually a D load range, and there is a Goodyear LT 215/85/16 that I saw when I was getting these put on. Didn't know the GY existed, but them looked and felt lighter than the BFG.

That said - I rock a solid 26mpg highway with these, at 75mph when not towing. They have never failed to hang on to any surface I put them on. Dang good shoes.

I believe the BFG Commercial Traction is still 40 lbs per tire.

my 245/75/16 BFG radial long trails(on the liberty) are still standard load, not even D or E.

My 245/75/16 retreads(on my cherokee) are load range E, and I'm not sure I even need to have air in them really.

Ideally I would be running a load range D on both.

I needed to deflate the Highway tread (Load range E) BFG commercials I had previously, so I could match the bumper with a minivan I needed to push through some grass in my yard. Even at 10psi in the tires, the rims were STILL about 2 inches off the ground. Yea, those sidewalls were STIFF.

But I'd rather have the stiffness and safety of an almost run-flat tire than the squishyness of a fully inflated P-rated BadYear stock tire.

I agree. I like my load range E 245/75 MTR's. May be overkill but I don't worry as much driving over the stumps, rocks, and cactus on my ranch. I like going to Big Bend as well and I wouldn't take a tire less than D or E in the backcountry. I would say it all depends on where you live and the terrain you drive over.

Run mine at 45PSI and have gotten up to 34 MPG driving on State roads between Evansville IN and Aurora, IL.
The week after I got 23 MPG driving in Michigan on the expressways where most of the time I was going 75 MPH - 80 MPH.
Of course in Michigan, they don't allow commercial jets to fly over the freeways because Michigan drivers will try to out run the jets. :ROTFL: :ROTFL:

I don't see why not, unless the chains have a LOT of flex in them (tighten them!) the outer diameter of the tire is like 30.2 or so. There should be enough clearance. I didn't have chains or the new cables for mine tho, when I got the Traction flavor last winter I had them put the studs into them. It was only like $12 per tire, and for the unholy amount of grip I got in the rear, WELL worth it for the 8 weeks that I was allowed to run the studs in Virginia. After that, I pulled the studs out myself. The tires STILL have an unbelievable amount of grip, and for being a year in, and about 30-35k on them now... They STILL look brand new and will swallow half a quarter in tread depth.

I got an honest 50k out of the highway tread in the rear, without rotating them, and 60k from the front. These traction have 2/32 more tread depth, I'm figuring I wont need tires again until these see at least 60-65k.
