Post subject:  Turbo Failed

Hello My Fellow CRD Members,

Got a few things to ask and get your input. My turbo failed January 1st (Great New Year, Right!) only have 64,000 miles on this darn thing. I was driving and I looked in my rear view mirror and could not see anything but smoke. I pulled over and noticed that oil was dripping from my tail pipe, so I thought it has to be the turbo. Checked the oil and it was about 1 ½-2 quarts low (Lucky).

I bought a use turbo that I was told had about 20,000 miles on it (I thought I could save some $$) for $380.00 with shipping. When I got the turbo I check the play in the turbo. If you are looking at the fins of the turbo, almost no play up and down, but side to side there is about 14-17,000 in. The fins on the intake side of the turbo have some dings in them as well, should I be concerned? I was going to put the turbo on myself, but a coworker of mine has a buddy that works for Cumming Generators that said he would help me do it. I show him the used turbo I bought; he expressed concern about some of the ding in the fins and suggested that I buy a new one. Here is some pic. If anyone wants me to email the pics to them to get a better look I would be more then happy to do so. What do you guys think???

We pulled the old turbo off and it has about the same play in it as the used one I bought, but the turbo spins fine. You could see that the exhaust side of the turbo had lots of oil/tarry gooey stuff cake on it. Pulled the turbo hoses and intercooler off and drained about a ½ quart of oil out them. Flushed the intercooler out and dried it out. Do I have to clean the intake? If so is there an easy way of doing this?
My old turbo model # is 35242112G the used one I bought is 35242115F does anybody know if this will be an issue if I put the 35242115F on? Is there a difference in these two turbos? Thanks in advance for your help.

I am kind of surprised you would bother with a used one? You are lucky to still have an engine, it looks the same to me in the pics.

Before I risked my engine with a used turbo I would take it to a firm that rebuilds them and have it checked out :dizzy:

I went 160,000 miles before my Turbo failed. 64K is not good service life.

Someone on eBay has a used one for sale for $ 695.00 or Offer. Maybe a better bet.

Or try moparonlineparts.com. I've had good luck with them for parts, and they list the Turbo new for around $ 1,288.00.

35242115F is the latest version of the the KJ CRD turbo. The only difference is a redesigned vacuum actuator (notice the difference in shape). GIve the new(used) turbo a shot, it will be much better than one with blown seals.
