WOW, all the blown turbo threads showing up make me think about just bitting the bullet and getting the GDE version.....I was thinking about it anyway. Coupled with my hot tune that might make a neat mod. How many folks have done this conversion? How tough to install? The welding causes me the biggest headache, has anyone successfully worked out a clamping arrrangement or some alternate method of connecting it? I actually though about high temp exhaust patch material. Thanks for any input. |

Open up the exhaust to 2 1/2" including the rear cat flange 2 1/8" choke point. Either way you go, make Sir Isac Newton smile instead of puke by having the choke point and stock muffler. Most of the turbo failures are due to over heating, invest in an EGT gauge and observe what makes the turbo go over 1300F and don't do it. Our CRDs run cooler with an opened up exhaust than with a stock system ![]() ![]() How many with working EGT gauges have had Turbo failures? Very few if any. Cheap insurance. ![]() |

When I asked Keith about the differences in the turbos, he explained they were different generations. We come stock with a gen 1 design. The GDE turbo is gen 3 from Garrett. Keith actually had both versions in his garage with the housings separated. The mechanics of how the vane profiles (or exposure) are completely different...in addition to the difference in vacuum versus electric actuation. I was also told that that the stock one was not the best design and that failure may be relatively frequent. Some of us may get the life of the engine out of them while others replace them with the tires. Warp's suggestions may help squeeze a little more longevity out of them...certainly a less expensive alternative. I suspect most of us don't get near the max EGTs while using these as a daily drivers, though. |

And yeh, I figure that sooner or later the TC will bite the dust but with a little bit of luck it'll happen while I am still under the exteded warrenty. We never drive it hard enough long enough to worry about the EGT and the drive home is a nice liesurely 30 mph for a 2-3 miles with a couple of stop lights so that's our cool down period. Next week I'm going to pop into a muffler shop and look at a series 70 dynaflow and opening everything up to 2 1/2". Should be simple and not very $$$$. Still, would like to hear about actual results from those that have doon the turbo upgrade. |

The GDE Turbo upgrade means that your HOT Tune is useless...there is a new tune that comes with the GDE Turbo. Either way...get the upgrade on the TC first. |
