I sent an email to DC asking about potential plans to put the CRD in the new Wrangler now that it has been unveiled. Their response was there are no plans right now but do to changing market conditions it may be a possibility in the future. Yeah, nuclear power is a possibility in the future too....I was hoping for a little more definitive answer, but I guess that'll have to do. After owning 3 Wranglers over the past 8 years and opting for a CRD for the mileage I still love my CRD, but I'd love it more in a Rubicon. Just in case anyone else was wondering.......W

The inital idea was to offer it in the Wrangler for '06 but for some reason it was dropped and I have heard it was a surrvey that showed a very poor responce. I have heard the 2.8L is going to be offered in the Dakota PU, in both 2wd & 4wd with 5 spd auto or 6 spd manual. My informer keeps saying the new MB V6 is coming to LX cars (Magnum, Charger, 300C) and Grand Cherokee, and in '07 MY is when this is suppose to happen.

Yeah, the 3.8L is the only engine offered, which kind of sucks. Looks like the trim packages are skimpy too...all you can get is X, Rubicon, and one other package. So all in all, your choices are going to shrink. That sucks. But thankfully they kept the roots of the Wrangler alive in the new JK.

I have always assumed that whatever is offered in the Chrysler/Jeep line in Europe in diesel, will be offered here eventually. My friend keeps telling the MB Blue CDI will be the diesel in LX platform, but my comment back to him is never happen. Why, because how would you feel if you paid $60k plus for a car that was in reality a MB only 1/2 the price. He always says the same thing, "you are driving an MB now with Dodge body and it hasn't effected MB sales at all." I never have really been able to get past that remark.

Also it was my impression the 300C & 300 Estate (Magnum) in Europe currently have the MB 3L I6 CDI engine and not a VM CRD V6 diesel.

I asked my dealer about a 2007 Grand Cherokee diesel and was told not till '08 or later when they do their normal model refresh. They explained they are having a hard time fitting a diesel that will comply with '07 diesel emission requirements into an existing Grand Cherokee. The front end and suspension will have to be modified somewhat.

I'd like to see one sooner, but that's one reason I bought my KJ. If I start seeing '07 Grand Cherokee CRD's, I'll be glad; but I'm also going to pay the dealer a visit. :?

I also read something similar to the above on maybe Allpar.com?

Well the engine that they are currently using meets US EPA (Except 5 CARB states) just as our CRD does and is sold in the US by MB. The V6 hat is replacing the I6 CDI is smaller and lighter then current I6 and will have no problems fitting in a LX car (which currently has a 6.1L 430 hp engine available) or Grand Cherokee (has same 6.1L engine availabe) so there is not a problem with weight. As for as new V6 Bluetech CDI diesel goes, it has passed EPA test for the next tier and is clean enough top pass CARB. The only thing in the way is politic's and public opinion or preception. From what I have been reading MB, Toyota & Honda have diesels that can be sold in the US and will be cleaner then the gassers when using biofuel.

PS: Allpar is a great place for disinformation. They big in denial about the MB & LX cars connection amoung other thing.

Well, that's just a big giant stinky bummer. I was really looking forward to a CRD Rubi in 2007. We were bugeting for it and everything.

Okay, now I'll direct my attention on the Gladiator and pray they actually make it like they're talking about; capable, manual tranny, diesel. I'll take that in a HEARTBEAT!!

I just like having something that the Wrangler guys/gals can't have yet. It drives them nuts! I'm on the R.O.F. and someone made a comment about the new wrangler looking like it bred with a Liberty to make it look more feminine and that this breeding and mixing of parts needed to stop. My response was, "we'll you'll never get a diesel then will you!" :D

I think the Scrambler or a diesel Dakota would be their next big hit. The combination of torque, pulling power, and fuel economy in a midsized pickup that people could actually afford would have truck sales thru the roof.

I agree. Put the CRD in the Dakota and they wouldn't be able to build enough of them. I personally would rather have a pickup, but there are no diesel mid-size or compact pickups in the game right now.

I'd finally part with my old '87 Subaru wagon for a diesel Dakota 4X4, end up with a diesel Dakota AND the CRD! :D Still hard to beat a 2 barrel carb, a set of points, and a manual tranny for making sure it'll run when you need it.

I had an '86 Brat. Man! do I miss that little truck. Had to downshift the 4-speed manual tranny to drive over a garden hose, but you couldn't kill the thing.

You know, while we are on this topic... Why DIDN'T Chrysler use the Dakota as their test vehicle for the CRD in the U.S. market?? Pickup trucks are the vehicles that made diesels popular in the U.S. They are also the vehicles that could benefit from diesel technology the most. I think they would have had even more success with the diesel in the Dakota. I wonder why they decided to use the Jeep Liberty to test the waters in the U.S.?

Probably several reasons. For one, the Dakota underwent a major redesign in '05, might have been a litle much on their plate to add a diesel in as well. Liberty is one of the best selling SUV's, while truck sales have been kind of sucky for the last couple of years (they were offering a 5 grand rebate when I bought an '04 Dakota). CRD was also up and running in Europe for several years, little if no redesign work to put them on the market here, a turnkey solution so to speak, just have Toledo start building them.

That's a good question. Maybe they feel that their technical knowledge based on putting diesels in the M- and G-Class Offroaders and the G-Class Cabriolet gives the Liberty an advantage as a platform. There really aren't any pickup trucks over there...the closest thing Mercedes has to a P/U is a Unimog. Maybe they were nervous about using a pickup as an American diesel springboard with no working knowledge of how it might differ from what they've put their smaller diesels in.. (shrug).

I would also guess that the Liberty is a lot further under the radar than the Dakota. Good PR analasis equation; If diesel springboard is successful (meets or exceeds goals), continue diesel rollout into other DC models. If diesel springboard falls below expectations, discontinue diesel option. It's a lot easier and cleaner from a PR perspective. If/when they put a diesel in the Dakota or Durango, we'll see SuperBowl commercials about it. They do that...and then fail...baaaaaaaAAAAAAaaad PR. I don't know about you, but I've never seen/heard a commercial for the CRD Liberty. I heard about it through word of mouth. Not very many people even know it exists.

Well I've seen quite a bit of advertisting on TV and otherwise about the Jeep CRD. But I will agree that most people still haven't heard of it. I get people walking around mine and asking questions all the time. What you both mention are great explanations and I would say you are both right on many reasons why the Dakota doesn't get diesel power yet.

Probably because 75% of Liberty's are sold to women according to local dealer

That would be a good test to see how well the diesel would sell in other vehicles I guess.

Yeah, but 90% of women don't want a diesel. It's odd...huh?

Oh well..I just thought it was interesting that the Jeep Liberty of all vehicles was the one to get the diesel first.
