There were issues of intake clogging in the TDIs. It appeares this could be a problem for us as well. Check out this discussion. http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/showthre ... 621&page=3
I posted a place there(here too now) to order the ProVent filter. I just ordered one. I couldn't believe the amount of intake clogging that I got on my TDI so I'm going to do this to prevent it. I talked with the fellow at http://www.airnowsupply.com/tdi/index.htm and he stated the filter protion does not need replaced unless in extemly severe dusty conditions.

The current VM Motori industrial engines marketed by Detroit Diesel are built with a CCV with the drain back to the oil pan. It's odd that the automotive engines are not built with the CCV.

Yesterday I drained my ProVent CCV filter and got about 1/8th cup of oil. This was after about 3K miles. so there is alot of oil going through the intake on this engine without a CCV filter. The air out let from the ProVent is still perfectly clear so I know my intake is no longer getting "oiled". IMHO the ProVent is woth every penny!

Do you have any pictures of the installation? Thanks!

Used something similiar on my gas vehicles, called a Condensator, www.condensator.com .

Basically, it's a big glass or plastic jar about the size of an oil filter, that installs in the PCV line between the PCV valve and the intake manifold. Inside is a filter cartridge made of wire mesh screen, and filled with dessicant beads. The oil mist condenses out in the filter, and drops to the bottom of the jar. Every so often, you just screw off the jar and empty it out, same with the filter, it screws off of the mounting head and you can dunk it in gas to clean it out, nothing to replace. Sells for about the same price as the Mann filter setup.

They make versions for both gas and diesel engines, based on the size of the engine. Fittings on the mounting head are for 1/2" ID hose.

I take it this is on your CRD? If so, could you give us a description of the install, ie, where and how you mounted it, how you routed the hoses, any particular problems you ran into?

I'm on the road all this week. I'll try to get pics this weekend. Mounted on passenger side aft of the air filter box. I zip tied it in place. 3/4 ID hose and a couple of 90s. I snaked the drain hose so I can get to it under the ft of the jeep. Drain terminates with a ball valve for easy drainage. You need to remove the engine cover & air filter housing to do the install. No big deal. I'll try to get more later.

Going to try putting the spare Condensator I took off my Dakota onto the CRD this weekend. If nothing else, might be able to compare how well it works versus the Mann filter. At least it's better than nothing, as far as sucking all that oil thru the turbo and intercooler.

That's one other thing I noticed on the tdi club website. Besides clogged EGR valves, the VW guys also have to flush out their intercoolers every so often to get all the gunk out of them.

Well, I took the plunge last Friday and picked up my dream Jeep, but after reading this thread I'm a little worried to put any miles on it. Why does my father-in-laws Ford Powerstroke have 200,000 miles on it with no EGR problems and we apparently have oil gumming up our EGR system?

Please post pictures of this install since I'm am now worried I traded in a maintenance free Honda for this possibly maintenance nightmare.

Also, does anyone out there have any GOOD stories to tell about their CRDs? I'm interested to hear high mileage reports with little or no problems so I can tell if all we read here are the problem reports.

Thanks. 8)

What year is your father's powerstroke? They didn't have EGR until the 2003 6.0L came out.

As far as a source for them goes...I got mine at http://www.reliableindustries.com/catal ... rovent.php

They had the best price I could find.

Well, that explains it. My father-in-laws diesel Powerstroke is a 2000 model year.

So I guess what I'm getting at is this: If I don't install this provent before I hit 1000 miles am I'm screwed? I'm only at 400 miles now.

not sure why you would think that. its not like the motor stops working after 1k miles of erg use. i have 7500 miles on mine and it still runs great. i'll be putting one on when i get a round to it. i'm thinking it will be a nice winter project :)

As picky as DaimlerChrysler is, I wonder how many warranties they are voiding because people are tampering with the engines? If you install a ProVent you may keep from costly cleaning later, but you may also void your warranty and incur huge expenses if something fails on the engine. So it's really a double-edged sword kind of deal.

I'd prefer to keep my rig stock. My point is that it sounds like this clogging is having significant and permanent impact in the EGR system as early as 1000 miles (I realize the Jeep keeps running after a failure) - so to avoid down time without my Jeep the Provent seems like the cure.

I am a civil engineer and I need to do a bunch of construction inspection, so my job depends on this jeep working 99% of the time - it is a perfect fit for me - so I need it to work.

Does anyone know of a particular build date at which units produced after this date are not affected by the faulty EGR? Or is it even faulty? I just purchased mine on 9-23-05 but the actual build date was 6-20-05.

My build date is March 12 - 14,867 miles - no EGR probelm

Almost 15k miles with no EGR problem, that's good. I'm hoping we can get this thread going such that every CRD owner on this board can report a build date, current mileage, and whether or not they have had the EGR problem. It would be nice to see if we can draw any kind of conclusion from this... even if it's a minimal one.

In service early April, 05. 15,555 miles. EGR codes, EGR TSB performed, reflash attempted, valve replaced. Almost all of my driving is highway.

Built in March some time 11th I think, No Erg Issues over 11,000 miles mostly highway. Oil changed only once.
