I have been searching previous posts and have read any that pertain to emissions testing yet I still have one question. I have a 2005 CRD which from what I read does not have ESP. I do know that I have ABS and in the previous posts the ESP is usually referenced in connection to the ABS (ie ESP/ABS) I am preparing myself with knowledge prior to heading to my testing station here in Ohio in order that all may go smoothly. So can my jeep be put on the rollers and tested for opacity or will that light up my instrument panel with warning lights? Usually for my gas jeep (98 xj) they plug in to the OBDII port for the test on no rollers just idling. Upon reading my owners manual it only talked about checking the OBDII to see whether it was ready to be tested or not. Any help would be appreciated.

I know here in new york My crd is exempt from emissions. Only a structural/lights/tires..etc test is done. Not sure how it works in ohio.

My parents have a diesel suburban and when it needed the emissions check it had to be put on the rollers with the sniffer in the tailpipe. I guess I wasn't very clear about my question in the first place. Will my ABS have a problem with being on the rollers? I don't see how it would affect the system, but I don't want to find out that I am wrong after the fact. Again I know that I do not have the ESP, but will the ABS system require me to have an alternative sniff test or can I be tested on the rollers? Thank you for the help.

The hard part will be getting THEM to understand that you need an alternative test. Having a 4WD vehicle on those stupid rollers WILL piss off the ABS system. Unfortunately, most of the tailpipe-snorting droids at those places only know what their procedures tell them, and they WILL most likely look at you as if you are a moron and couldn't possibly know anything more about cars than they do.

Good luck, I would ask to either be put on a 4WD compatible roller system (and have your CRD in full-time 4WD when you go in) or ask for a supervisor and explain that it will cause the computer to throw an ABS error code in the system.

As an added bit of insurance for your test, try to locate a nearby biodiesel station and fill up with between 20% and 50% mix of biodiesel. B20 is perfect for the winter, and your test results will be quite acceptable for the tailpipe sniffers.

Being a '05 you do not have ESP and you can do the roller test.It will turn on your ABS light but after shutdown and then maybe 10' of normal driving the ABS light will go out with zero issues. The ABS light will only turn on since the computer is sensing that 2 wheels are stopped and 2 wheels are moving shutting down ABS operation but since you do not have ESP it can do nothing more then shut the ABS down. When the computer senses all 4 wheels moving again the light will go off and normal operation of the ABS will resume and no need to reset or clear anything.

Being a selectable 4wd system you can do the roller test since you can select 2wd,your not going to get away with "it's 4wd or AWD" line since you have a selectable t-case.

Thank you for the information. I am going to swing by the testing station this afternoon and have it tested so that I will be able to get my license plates. I will inform them of the situation and make sure that if/when the ABS light comes on during the test that they will still pass me if my opacity is within limits. I do not see the ABS light coming on as being a problem but if it is I will kindly ask for a supervisor and discuss an alternate testing solution. I will let you know how it goes this evening.

It might be hard to do today if your temperatures are like what we've got in Columbus but get your CRD good and warm prior to taking it for testing :jester:

Having done extensive chassis dyno testing with the KJ CRD (2WD mode only), there will be no problem with the ABS. The ABS light will obviously come on as it will with any RWD vehicle equipped with ABS on a chassis dyno, so the operator will be familiar with this and not consider it a problem. After driving a short distance after the test, the ABS light will go out. No need for a scanner to clear it.

Joe, if you mean to say you are at a crsisp 13 F ...then yes our whether is the same. A few entrance ramp runs helped "clean" out everything in preparation for the test. The hardest part about the whole "cleaning out" process was keeping traction on wet pavement although fun when it didn't. I guess it was not all in vain because I passed, but I did not have to be put on the rollers. The technician plugged into the OBDII port and began the test. Two minutes later everything was OK, except when the guy checking everyone out called for the owner of the land rover.... :ALONE: I didn't say anything and neither did anyone else. After he checked my papers he corrected himself...2005 Jeep. I immediately claimed that one! Thanks again all for your help.
