Are you sure it's not the timing belt? The serp belt is cheap.

The timing belt can be found on Amazon for like $65... For $150, he had better deliver it by hand and install it for me.

He said it was new in the packaging... But a cardboard box doesn't justify quadrupling the price.

I didn't see that one, but I also am unaware of the cost of the in-tank pump. I do know that we don't HAVE a "stock" lift pump setup... But I solved that problem for less than any in-tank pump that I've ever seen with the Mr. Gasket.

Aren't you guys being a little harsh? I just bought a new OEM serpentine belt for the CRD from http://www.moparonlineparts.com. The discounted price, not including shipping, was $94.52.

The guy doing my timing belt suggested that I not risk using a cheaper after-market belt, due to the time and effort necessary to change one of these things.

My total parts bill is just under $900 to change timing belt, serpentine belt, water pump, thermostat, tensioner, and idler pulleys. That's with a discounted price for everything except the thermostat. I had to search the country for one; they're currently out of stock nearly everywhere. I was tipped on where to find one of two still available by http://www.jeeppartsdept.com, and for that I'm most grateful. Their prices, by the way, seem to be the same as Mopar Online parts, penny for penny.

Maybe harsh but Mopar belts are just rebranded outsourced belts which if I was guessing would be Gates. What you are paying extra for is the Mopar lable. That said there are some really cheap after market serp belts I wouldn't touch. Good ones run in the $35-50 range depending on source.

I can tell you that the timing belt I got out of the Mopar box had Goodyear stamped on the smooth side. That's no lie, they didn't even try to hide it.

Interesting, the timing belt I got off Amazon was a Gates brand. I talked with Keith at GDE about setting the tensioner b/c I couldn't get it to do that little "window" thing into the right place without a LOT of force... Bending the tool pins even! The conclusion was that the tensioner was fine, the belt might have been a tiny bit shorter. Makes sense, the whole arrangement has been driving fine for several thousand miles now... So I'm calling it safe.
